The Final Days of Smithfield, London's Last Medieval Market. ⏳️
Soon, we shall lose the last authentic market within central London to have traded since the middle ages. In no time, this working class relic will, like all the others, become just another gentrified space. Be it Borough or Covent Garden, all we've left are overpriced, unrelatable tourist traps instead of the working class hubs that were once so packed with life. @ChelseaDan5, myself, and many others will mourn the passing of this monumental site. Once you've moved, what are essentially the organs of London from where they're meant to be, so too will you kill their host. Just because you give something the same name doesn't make it the same thing. They weren't just places to trade, but the whole world to entire generations of Londoners who lived and worked within the core of our capital. I could have made a much longer video but decided to keep it short despite having no doubt that many naysayers will disagree with me for whatever reason. I will be giving tours on the area and the abundance of history surrounding the market. I hope that if you're not one of those who'll join me, you'll get down there while it's still alive to pay your respects. Join me at @PubHistoryTours to stay up to date on tour dates. Thank you all for watching. 🤝
@VinnieSull1van@bedford_colleen@BygoneBritain@PubHistoryTours Those scenes fairly common in my day and even my daughter did the maypole dance at her school in the 80’s. We had the joy of English Country dancing in my schools up until senior school.
