More than 40 aftershocks have been recorded following the magnitude 7.2 earthquake reported this Friday near Tonosí, on the Azuero Peninsula, confirmed Néstor Luque, director of the Institute of Geosciences (IGC) at the University of Panama.

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake; earlier reports cited 8.0 and then 7.6, struck southern Panama on Friday at 12:56 local time, about 12 km west-southwest of Pitaloza Arriba, at a depth of 12.6 km, #USGS said.

National Civil Protection Omar Smith, Telemetro said damage was concentrated in Veraguas, Herrera and Los Santos, with no reported damage to Panama City skyscrapers.

Shaking was felt in Panama City, Costa Rica and parts of Colombia. No confirmed casualties yet.

Schools were closed and Metro lines briefly suspended. The Panama Canal is operating normally. Tsunami waves of 1–3 m were possible on some Panama coasts. Aftershocks continue.
