A lot of librarians say academic libraries need to satisfy user expectations to be successful. I want to push back on that. Sometimes users expect things that are unreasonable or too costly. Trying to meet expectations drains us and doesn't necessarily support learning.

I feel like a bad librarian sometimes, but customer service is not my primary goal. Learning is the goal, and libraries have a role there, but it doesn't have to be "give everyone everything they want." We have a responsibility to be good stewards of resources.

@lucasjmaxwell I'm not sure how I feel about this TBH. For one thing, I can't possibly know the content of every book in my library so if I don't give a content warning am I a bad librarian? I also tend to avoid commenting on what people are reading because it's none of my business.
