War is not lawless. 75 years ago today, the Geneva Conventions were signed. The Conventions oblige all parties to a conflict to respect international humanitarian law in order to protect lives und human dignity. Germany continues to support the important work of the ICRC.
Today we mark the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions. Since Aug. 12th, 1949, they have safeguarded human dignity in the darkest times. 📜
States and non-state armed groups must ensure these rules continue to save lives.
🚨Today our team began carrying out a multi-day operation to facilitate the release and transfer of hostages held in Gaza and of Palestinian detainees to the West Bank.
This will include the delivery of additional, much-needed humanitarian assistance into Gaza.
'Why are you silent?'
In the age of social media, it's easy to criticize. But for us, denouncing one side in a war only happens when all other options are exhausted.
@CCardonICRC explains why we work behind closed doors to reach those in need. 👇
30 days that mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, children and relatives are worried sick about loved ones taken hostage in #Gaza.
Repeating our urgent call again: they should be released immediately!
We @ICRC won’t stop pressing for this and also conduct humanitarian visits.
Good news out of #Sudan
Though our role as a neutral and impartial actor my @ICRC_Sudan colleagues facilitated the release of 64 members of the SAF held by the RSF.
As always, we stand ready to act as a neutral intermediary to facilitate additional releases of detainees.
Our partners delivered much needed aid to the people of Gaza today. But this is a drop in the ocean. Many more people need help. We will keep pushing for a regular flow of humanitarian aid and personnel.
📢 The last truck of our convoy of humanitarian aid for #Gaza has loaded on ships in Port of Aqaba, Jordan.
These critical supplies include:
🏥 medicine
📦 medical supplies
🚰 chlorine tablets for drinking water
Access to help the wounded and sick is desperately needed.
We have been in touch with both Hamas & Israeli officials about accessing those deprived of liberty.
We are asking for the release of hostages, unharmed.
For access to those captured.
For opportunities to communicate with their families.
We continue this call to all parties.
From concept to editing, this video was a joy for me to create! A fantastic collaboration with colleagues filming in 19 countries in prisons, hospitals, a morgue, physical rehabilitation centers, with the military, and much more.

Why do we stay neutral in conflict zones?
Our organization was established under the Geneva Conventions, the most widely ratified treaties in the world with 196 countries signatories.
Today our mission remains the same: to help and protect people caught up in war and violence.
What are the new weapons emerging now in today’s wars? Are they ethical?
Using augmented reality, our colleague Nicola explains how some autonomous weapons work and why we need to act now to keep human control over life and death decisions.
Today - My urgent call with @antonioguterres for new international rules on autonomous weapon systems to protect humanity.
The autonomous targeting of humans by machines is a moral line that we must not cross.

Walking home in #Kyiv & running to the shelter under the sound of multiple explosions 💥
Many people were rushing to the nearest underground place to find relative safety. Surreal scenes & sadly a reality for millions across #Ukraine.

Many people ask us this: "Why are you silent?"
But we work behind the doors with all the parties involved.
Neutrality is crucial to gain access to conflict zones and building trust. This allows us to assist those in need and reach areas where others cannot.
