(Please excuse the length; I got it as short as I dare, but there’s a lot wrapped up in this verse)
What Amos was doing was no different from what the other prophets did, pointing to Israel’s constant replacement of God’s will and way with their own religious rituals and traditions.
We see these “rebukes” from the prophets, such as Micah 6:8, Isaiah 1:10-17, Jeremiah 22:3, and Hosea 6:6, which Jesus brought forth in his critique of the religious leaders who were substituting religious rituals and traditions for what God truly desired, namely to extend mercy to others as God was extending mercy to them, saying, “But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’” (Matthew 9:13a)
And so, Amos tells them to let true justice flow, and to recognize their need to do justly, that is, to provide fair and impartial judgment like an ever-flowing, powerful river. And to let righteousness consistently flow from them as a stream that never dries up.
In the end, what we see from Amos and the other prophets is that no amount of religion will substitute for what the Lord considers most important: justice and righteousness. But such righteousness, apart from a relationship with God, is impossible.
We see this in what the prophet Isaiah said, “But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousness is like filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6). This is then echoed in what the Apostle Paul said, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” that is, short of God’s holy and righteous standards for life (Romans 3:23). It is also found in Psalm 14:3, which is again cited in Romans 3:10.
This is important because of Israel’s constant longing for the Day of the Lord to come; “Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! For what good is the day of the Lord to you? It will be darkness, and not light.” (Amos 5:18) But what good will that Day be if they continue to live in a way that is not pleasing to Him?
In the end, to do justly and to live righteously is only found in a relationship with Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21; Philippians 3:8b-9).
May God’s blessing be upon us today as we continually focus on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith. Take care, and God bless.
During the rebuilding of the Second Temple, the people grew tired and fatigued because they had the wrong priorities. As a result, whatever they put their hands to led to negative consequences.
The Lord said, “Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins?’ Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Consider your ways! You have sown much, and bring in little; you eat, but do not have enough; you drink, but you are not filled with drink; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages, earns wages to put into a bag with holes.” (Haggai 1:4-6)
In their effort to gain more, they grew fatigued. They planted their crops but had little to show for it, and whatever they earned was gone as soon as they received it. They couldn’t even eat or drink enough to be full.
Why? Their priorities were misplaced.
Jesus said, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
We become tired and worn out by having the wrong priorities.
The Israelites were seeking wealth and possessions more than they were seeking God. This wears out those caught on this treadmill of always wanting more. They keep moving but go nowhere. It’s not only frustrating but also exhausting.
To end this constant fatigue, we need to get our priorities straight. We need to seek God first and foremost, and as Jesus promised, whatever else we need will be added to our lives.
Thank you for your posting today. It is greatly appreciated. Take care and God bless
