Galvarino, a valiant warrior from the Mapuche tribe, emerged as a symbol of fierce resistance during the tumultuous 1500s in Chile. Captured after the battle of Lagunillas in 1557, Galvarino faced a horrifying fate when the Spanish governor Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza ordered the amputation of his right hand as punishment. In a stunning display of defiance, Galvarino offered his left hand as well, which was ruthlessly removed.
Despite his brutal ordeal, Galvarino's spirit remained unbroken. He wasn't content with merely surviving – he was determined to keep fighting. Around a month later, he appeared on the battlefield once more, this time with large blades ingeniously strapped to his forearms where his hands used to be. With his new makeshift weapons, he led 3,000 Mapuche warriors into the Battle of Millarapue against the Spanish, who numbered 1,500.
During the battle, Galvarino's rallying cry, "Nobody is allowed to flee but to die because you die defending your mother country!" echoed across the battlefield as he charged towards a Spanish camp. Although the battle ultimately ended in a Spanish victory due to their superior technology and weaponry, Galvarino's bravery and determination left an indelible mark. Some accounts even state that no Spanish soldiers were killed during the skirmish.
Galvarino's unwavering defiance continued to astound. When he was captured once again and faced execution, he was given a chance to plead for mercy. In response, he defiantly declared, "I would rather die than live like you, and I'm only sorry that my death will keep me from tearing you to pieces with my teeth." Galvarino met a gruesome end, being torn apart by dogs as he stood his ground until the very last moment.
The legacy of Galvarino endured far beyond his lifetime. His legend inspired countless warriors over the next 250 years, until the 1800s, to fight against Spanish oppression and strive for freedom. His name became synonymous with unyielding courage and the unbreakable spirit of those who refused to be conquered.
