Corporal Arthur Souza was watching wild hogs in the Kisatchie National Forest near midnight on August 13. He heard heavy breathing, saw a four legged shape charging, and fired. It was Axel. Eight years old. His partner for two years.

Souza is on administrative leave. No criminal charges. Sheriff McCain calls it a “mistake of the head, not the heart.”

These dogs never clock out. One second of human error and the partner is gone.

Rest easy, Axel. You earned it.
