@SamJRushworth Sounds like you don’t have a student loan. Yes you might technically be better off but it’s not always worth it. I’ve reduced my hours because to work a fifth day as my marginal tax rate would be 71% with my plan 2 student loan. Those with kids you also lose free nursery days

@CallumCMason I’ve reduced my hours instead - 100k tax trap plus a plan 2 student loan means there’s very little incentive to work a 5th day, so I’ve decided to do four. It’s nice to do part time but as others have said - the current system kills productivity + growth

@PolitlcsUK In the UK, a £200k salary already nets only 5–6x what £20k does after tax, NI, student loans, and allowance tapering. There would be absolutely 0 incentive to take a higher paid role after taking deductions into account or for higher earners to stay in the UK
