@archer_rs Why would the EU carve out a special deal for the UK after brexit? The UK already had one and effectively burned everything down and salted the earth on the way out.
@PellePeloton12@groby If your laptop is on battery, then it should be locking itself, turning off the display, and sleeping. If it's on a charger, energy usage by a screensaver doesn't matter. In any case, displaying a screensaver to people that aren't around when energy consumption matters is wrong.
@Aella_Girl@dash_eats Where's the tech? Because it's meaningful now. If you haven't noticed increasing portions of the west are burning each summer and the southwest and a good portion of california are on the verge of losing their water supplies.
@Aella_Girl@grok@dsawyer This is exactly the criticism people make of a lot of doomer articles. If you posit magical properties to get around difficulties, it's becomes an article of faith.
How exactly would these prions survive and spread? The world is full of microbes that want a free protein snack
@laytoun I think the discussion was over before this wc. Ronaldo isn't the player he was, Messi was better for much longer, and Ronaldo is kinda a trash human being
@InternetJenkins@barakgila@Aella_Girl@GeffenAvraham The project took too long but start with a few years of studies and lawsuits. Add in known and unknown layers of utilities (sewer, water, fiber, telephone, & power lines) and everything has to be done without disrupting the utilities or traffic for too long and it takes a while.
@SteveSyme1@archerships@Aella_Girl What AI? Every single LLM out there takes days to months and 10s of thousands to billions of dollars of compute time to learn even the simplest fact.
@c0degaf@straceX More than that, I think it took out a bunch of risc architectures as makers switched to it and then were stuck as it flamed out. Notably the Dec alpha got canned in favor of itanium
@thisgodisbored@Grady_Booch Why do you think it's more for the GPU? A h100 and associated equipment is drawing 1kW it probably takes more than a day for one to generate the system. That's about 50 days of effort by a person and I'm sure that the person can come up with that system in that time
@AlwaysMrWild@StatisticUrban Harvard can probably do this with tuition, I doubt this is the case with research funding. Trips to archives in Africa or field work in Europe or building labs is expensive
@JarickWorks@davepl1968 It depends on the domain. Fortran have better performance for math intensive code for a long time and that might still be the case. Look at code for complex multicore/multithreaded software and c may not give better performance. It almost certainly gives worse safety
