When the 2018 Defuse proposal leaked, showing Wuhan scientists had been given the idea to put furin cleavage sites into SARS-like viruses, the Proximal Origin authors knew the experiments could've gone ahead and they didn't know what genetic engineering strategy and virus backbone the Wuhan scientists would've used.

Implicitly there is some growing acknowledgment that some critics of the mania were right all along, but nobody who was right all along has been made editor or distinguished professor anywhere, while the people who led the madness still enjoy the bully pulpit. Until the "circulation of elites" happens, of course the people who were right all along ought to keep harping on this theme.

"Just move on" is what people who were right all along always get told--by people who were wrong but want to keep their old clout regardless of having been wrong. When I was younger, I experienced this as everyone who criticized the Iraq War being kept out of positions of influence long after it was clear that all their warnings had been correct.
