For anyone planning a trip to China:

1) First get a good VPN (I use Astril). The great firewall is real and probably the most annoying thing to deal with day to day.

2) Download WeChat and add your CC, everything runs on it, from payments to metro systems to friendships (everyone chats on it).

3) I'd also suggest downloading Didi (taxis), Baidu (maps/translation), Meituan (food) and Diangping (restaurants). Covers daily life.

4) Chinese are actually really friendly/easily approachable, even if they don't speak English (which is common outside big cities).

5) Don't be peturbed by the apparent brashness or sometimes rude behaviour, remember it's a country of a billion plus people of all shapes and sizes. Much like America in that regard lol.
