Today, I received the heartbreaking news that my friend, Mahmoud Al-Ismail, lost his life while carrying out mine clearance operations in the countryside of Homs, Syria.

I had known Mahmoud for more than 10 years. He was a kind, honorable man with an excellent reputation. Following the victory of the Syrian revolution and the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, he dedicated himself to clearing landmines to help protect civilians and make Syria safer.

These mines were planted across Syria by the Assad regime and continue to pose a deadly threat to innocent civilians. Mahmoud, along with the Syrian Ministry of Defense’s engineering teams, risked his life every day to remove them and prevent further tragedy.

I will never forget Mahmoud, and I will never forget those who sacrifice their lives for a safer and better future for Syria.

Rest in peace, my friend.
