Sowing medics and lucerne at Black Rock today in Upper North South Australia, looking for climate adaptation traits in this low rainfall environment. Exploring diversity from wild relatives as part of the Crop Trust BOLD program. #BOLDcwr
Until a species has a scientific name, assessing its extinction risk is nearly impossible, making protection and conservation incredibly difficult.
In 2021, @kewgardens scientists and their partners worldwide named 205 new plant species.

@pbl1972@BarenbrugAUS We went for cocksfoot only in this experiment. The producer sowed at right angles cocksfoot plus phalaris to the lucerne and it also looks good. At another site we have included chicory.
We are evaluating different ways of sowing lucerne with perennial grass at Binnnum SA with @BarenbrugAUS . How do you sow yours? Alternate rows, cross sowing, wide spacing or all down the same row?
@HarlockPastoral@BarenbrugAUS Thanks for your info Scott. We know that spatially separating the species are important, so that you are sowing at different angles.
Crop wild relatives hold the most promise for developing potatoes 🥔 that can grow in more stressful environments, ensuring food and nutrition for millions of climate change-vulnerable families.

“This special edition of @crop_science on the successful use of @CropWildRelativ in pre-breeding is incredibly significant... If we want to ensure an ongoing food supply, we need to give pre-breeding with #CWR long-term investment.”

Check this out! Our SARDI 10 Series 2 #Lucerne is topping the 2020 @LucerneAust forage yield trials at Keith in SA. A great example of how you can #growwithconfidence with @BarenbrugAUS. More on this variety here 👉https://t.co/LZhkHlSM64
#Alfalfa is the go-to crop to provide #livestock with nutritious food in challenging conditions. A #CWR research project has built on this tolerance to #drought by crossing even more hardy wild alfalfas with cultivated ones.

This could be the greatest benefit of alfalfa in Patagonia. 1000’s hectares of natural grasslands getting a recovery period for the first time in decades.
Day 4 in #Chile - we meet @MilicevicRene, a 3rd generation sheep farmer, & President of the Livestock Association of Tierra del Fuego. #Alfalfa = better feed = healthier animals. It also minimizes the impact of grazing on paddocks, allowing natural pastures to restore themselves.
Today we started a 5-day visit to #Chile’s Magallanes region, where our @CropWildRelativ#alfalfa pre-breeding partners @iniachile are evaluating 70+ lines of wild x elite materials to develop a variety that we hope will adapt to the #drought & the cold of this austral paradise.
We met Alejandro Reyes from Estancia Cerro Guido, who’s been increasing production of #alfalfa during the past 6 years. He’s collaborating w/ @iniachile’s @MomoIvelic evaluating new varieties. Said: alfalfa is our queen; it grows very well in very dry seasons, like last year.
Carlos Ovalle, @iniachile’s Nat’l Coordinator of Environment & Sustainability, leader of the @CropWildRelativ#alfalfa pre-breeding project in Chile, working w/ our partners in Australia, Kazakhstan & China. We join him & his colleagues in Magallanes to see project’s progress.
Last year, as part of our #alfalfa pre-breeding effort in #Chile, Viviana Barahona, @iniachile#Cauquenes, worked w/ small-scale farmers in setting up 168 demonstrative plots — from #Valparaíso to #Biobío. Alfalfa is a viable option for farmers facing excess heat & lack of water.
