🔴 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐞: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐡’𝐬 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐒𝐋 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 In the aftermath of Bangladesh's political upheaval in August 2024, the country's universities have become deeply polarized, leaving thousands of students associated with the Bangladesh Students League (BSL) facing an uncertain academic future. Many have reportedly been unable to attend classes, sit examinations, or complete their degrees due to expulsions, arrests, intimidation, and fears of violence on campus. For these students, education has become another casualty of political conflict. Rather than relying on transparent investigations and due process, many institutions are portrayed as allowing political affiliation to determine access to higher education. Hostile campus environments, threats from rival groups, and the inability or unwillingness of university authorities to guarantee student safety have, according to these accounts, forced numerous students into academic exile even where no formal charges or disciplinary findings exist against them. This situation raises broader questions about human rights, the rule of law, and the independence of educational institutions. Excluding students from classrooms and examination halls because of their perceived political identity challenges the principles of equal access to education, academic freedom, and institutional neutrality. International human rights standards, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), affirm that education should be accessible without discrimination based on political opinion. The consequences extend far beyond individual students. A nation that allows political divisions to determine who can study risks undermining its own future by depriving a generation of education, opportunity, and hope. Ensuring that every student can pursue higher education safely, fairly, and without political discrimination is essential not only for justice but also for preserving the integrity of Bangladesh's universities and strengthening the country's democratic and social foundations.
