The amazing “piglet squid” (Helicocranchia sp.) gets its nickname for its small round body, wiggling tail, and siphon that looks like the nose of a pig. This one was spotted by MBARI researchers 900 meters (2,950 feet) underwater off the Monterey Bay.

A giant among larvaceans.
Bathochordeaus is considered a giant among larvaceans, but it's about the size of a breakfast muffin. Look closely, and you'll see this giant larvacean towering beside the tiny, regular variety larvacean to its right.

Under the sea in #Fiji we took ~1000 photos 📸 across 29 #coralreef sites. These were stitched together creating a beautiful #3D reef reconstruction. We use this to measure aspects of the #habitat, which is critical when exploring reef #fish 🐠 health. #conservation
