Remember when the internet first arrived and we paid by the minute for a phone connection? Then by the megabyte? Until, almost overnight, it became a flat monthly subscription with “unlimited” access.

We’re doing the same thing with AI right now. Charging by the token, then offering subscriptions that still come with ceilings and rate limits. One day this will look just as strange.

Every new abundance begins as a scarce resource we carefully meter, until the underlying scarcity disappears and the metering itself starts to feel absurd.

The pattern is older than either technology. We keep inventing new ways to sell the future in small, billable units… until the future arrives and we wonder why we ever bothered. 🧐
