UW-Madison’s @uw_lsc is proud to sponsor #AEJMC22. As a leader in #scicomm research, education, and practice, they offer a number of MS and PhD programs (https://t.co/GYsFVPx6fz). Also, please connect with the school's students & faculty at the conference. https://t.co/nHP56jaLcm
Another episode of Propelling Women In Power #podcast is out now! @brossardd, professor & chair @UW_LSC, shares her insights in #scicomm and how we can better understand each other to build a more diverse community of scientists. Listen here: https://t.co/yub0qLTA2v

New forms of creative, non-human intelligence are exciting and promise to bring great benefits, most of which still have to be imagined. But this prospect also stirs up worries

"Direct public engagement is the best way to help people understand that even the most canonized scientific facts once were subject to debate." Excellent essay by @couldthishappen https://t.co/O43Jwa5M3D
Any structural change that impacts public engagement
will need to be accompanied by considerable efforts to make resources widely available and known to scientists, such as ensuring that scientists perceive the support from high-level administrators for engaging with publics. 2/2
We also combined w/ public available data to explore institutional level factors, e.g., mention of #engagement and #outreach in #tenure guidelines, the proportion of #university budget from state government, relative size of #extension faculty, and #media market size. A thread:
Despite the weak impacts of institutional
factors across universities, we found an indirect effect of tenure guidelines. Senior scientists at univ emphasizing more engagement in tenure guidelines see larger effects of #scicomm training on public scholarship participation. 1/2
"[S]cientists’ perceptions of the university climate on support for engagement, including support from high-level administrators and for graduate students, [predict] participation in public scholarship." New @SciPublic article, lead-authored by @luyebao https://t.co/Nx898OT7Le

"#COVID19 has raised awareness about many pressing problems within the field of #scicomm ... But one challenge sticks out: our regular and unapologetic return to deficit thinking that we know is not good for us." My thoughts on @SciPublic's 30th birthday. https://t.co/CXjEmF4iIb
.@lizjosullivan explains two main misconceptions on #ResponsibleAI: 1.) We’ve reached consensus on how to debias existing enterprise AI, and 2.) regulation is the only solution to algorithmic discrimination we need for safe, #AccountableAI.
@CT_Bergstrom@jevinwest@scheufele@zeynep@M_B_Petersen @jbakcoleman It will be fascinating to watch (and crucial for the field) to see how this trade-off is navigated.
I will try to write a bit more about misinformation and evolution later, but do read the piece and let me know what you think:

Scientists have yet to adapt to new algorithmic information environments, and things will get worse unless we fundamentally change our approach to #scicomm. Some thoughts (with @UW_LSC chair @brossardd) in @ScienceMagazine: https://t.co/h9UgIagyNV. CliffsNotes thread below ...
