Why did Black sitcoms in the '90s resonate so much with audiences?

"That was the last time we had a monoculture," PBS News' @GeoffRBennett said. "That was the time we shared reference points. Tens of millions of people would sit and watch these shows night after night."

"Now, everyone's sort of in their own silos. Everyone has a phone," he later added.

In the 1990s, there was a major boom of Black comedy shows on television, from the sketch comedy "In Living Color" to the sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air."

Bennett, co-anchor of the PBS News Hour, explores the explosion of Black sitcoms during that decade in his new book, "Black Out Loud." He discusses his book with @IAmAmnaNawaz for a special episode of the PBS News podcast, "Settle In."

Forecasts call for 1 to 2 feet of snowfall, accompanied by wind gusts up to 60 mph. The combination of strong winds and heavy, wet snow may bring down tree limbs and power lines, potentially causing power outages.
