URGENT: TUNDU LISSU’S LIFE IS IN DANGER

Credible information indicates that Tundu Lissu’s life is at serious risk.

For more than 470 days, Tundu Lissu has been held in detention in Tanzania as an unconvicted prisoner, without a fair and timely resolution of his case.

His continued detention has drawn widespread international condemnation:

1. Amnesty International has declared his arrest unjust and called for his immediate release.

2. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has concluded that his detention is arbitrary.

3. On 10 July 2026, the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) called on the Government of Tanzania to resolve his detention within 30 days.

For more than two decades, Tundu Lissu has faced relentless persecution for his peaceful advocacy for democracy, the rule of law, and the protection of fundamental freedoms in Tanzania. In 2017, he narrowly survived an assassination attempt after being shot multiple times.

The Tanzanian authorities bear full responsibility for Tundu Lissu’s safety, health, and life.

TUNDU LISSU KUMUHOJI MKUU WA GEREZA LA UKONGA NA KAMISHNA MKUU WA MAGEREZA KATIKA SHAURI LA KIKATIBA NAMBA 7300/2026

Mwenyekiti wa Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) Taifa, Mhe. Tundu Lissu, atawahoji kwa maswali ya dodoso Kamishna Mkuu wa Magereza pamoja na Mkuu wa Gereza la Ukonga tarehe 1 hadi 3 Julai 2026 katika Shauri la Kikatiba Na. 7300 la Mwaka 2026 mbele ya Mahakama Kuu ya Tanzania, Masijala Kuu Dodoma.

Shauri hilo lilifunguliwa na Mawakili Kulwa Maduhu, Nashon Nkungu na Paul Kisabo dhidi ya Mwanasheria Mkuu wa Serikali, Kamishna Mkuu wa Magereza na Mkuu wa Gereza la Ukonga.

Katika shauri hilo, Mahakama inaombwa kuamua kuhusu masuala mbalimbali ya kikatiba yanayohusu vikwazo vya Jeshi la Magereza dhidi ya Mhe. Tundu Lissu, mawakili wake, ndugu, viongozi na wanachama wanaomtembelea gerezani.

Miongoni mwa masuala yanayolalamikiwa ni pamoja na kuzuiwa kwa viongozi na wanachama kumuona Mhe. Lissu gerezani, pamoja na vitendo vya askari wa magereza vya kusikiliza mazungumzo kati ya Mhe. Lissu na mawakili wake wanapofanya mashauriano ya kisheria, jambo ambalo linakiuka haki ya faragha na haki ya mawakili kufanya kazi yao kwa mujibu wa Katiba na Sheria.

Katika shauri hilo, Mhe. Tundu Lissu ni miongoni mwa wajibu maombi (Respondents, huku Chama cha Wanasheria Tanganyika kitashiriki kama mdau mwenye maslahi katika shauri (Interested Party) baada ya Mahakama kukubali maombi yake.

Aidha, kutokana na uzoefu wao wa kukumbana na changamoto hizo wanapomtembelea Mhe. Lissu gerezani kwa ajili ya mashauriano ya kisheria, Mhe. Lissu anatarajiwa pia kuwahoji mawakili waliofungua shauri hilo ili waweze kuieleza Mahakama kuhusu mazingira halisi wanayokumbana nayo wanapotekeleza wajibu wao wa kitaaluma.

Shauri hilo litasikilizwa kwa njia ya Mtandao mbele ya Jopo la Majaji watatu wa Mahakama Kuu; Mhe. Jaji Mruma, Mhe. Jaji Dkt. Rumisha na Mhe. Jaji Dkt. Longopa.

Shauri hili ni miongoni mwa mashauri muhimu ya kikatiba yanayoweza kuweka mwelekeo wa kisheria kuhusu haki ya mawakili kufanya mashauriano ya faragha na wateja wao waliopo mahabusu au gerezani, pamoja na kulinda misingi ya haki ya kupata msaada wa kisheria na usiri wa mawasiliano kati ya wakili na mteja.

Internal meetings of political parties are regulated by the parties themselves, and the role of the Police is strictly limited to the provision of security and maintenance of public order nothing more.

The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) has received these developments with profound shock and concern .

We shall convene urgently to determine appropriate legal measures, both domestically and internationally, against not only against this position but also against any individual or authority who will attempt to implement this unlawful and void directive, in blatant violation of the Constitution and the laws of the land.

Genuine reconciliation cannot exist where the truth is concealed, injustice is tolerated, and those responsible are shielded from accountability.

There can be no lasting peace without truth, no meaningful reconciliation without justice, and no sustainable future without accountability.
