My son has been bullied for his hair. He's had kids put gum, glue and had a little girl wipe her shoes on his hair while at school. He got to the point he wanted to cut it but I showed him videos of other natives with long hair. An now he's proud of his hair and very popular with the teachers at school. 17 year-old Joey cooks for his family of five every night. His mother had been ill for a very long time and so he took over cooking duties while his father worked 12 to 13 hours a day. Sadly, his mother passed away on August 7.

I was born down the block on 116th and Morningside. Right now we like between Manhattan and whatnot, but he just got shot on the block and died on the block he was born on and raised on, ironically.

And when that happened, I think I was 13, and it was kind of hard for me to process, but I did know that the valuable lesson that I learned was that I didn’t want to be like my brother. He showed me not to be like him.

Anybody could tell you nah, he’s nothing like his brother. My brother was tough. I never was tough. I was always on some like get-fly pretty boy.

When he died is when I turned into Pretty Flacko, you know? Before that I wanted to be just like him. So I had a point to prove, like I’m tough, I could hang. That never really was me. And what I learned is that nobody will ever love you and protect you like a real blood big brother. And so I knew that I was on my own from there.

All the men in my family was just dead or in jail. Pops died. My uncle got deported to Barbados. I really didn’t have much people to look up to.

So I started just glorifying people of the arts, and I knew that I didn’t want that kind of road, that kind of story, to be my destiny.
