Your work ethic may say more about you than any other characteristic you possess. A great work ethic opens many doors that would probably remain closed otherwise. Create good habits that make a great work ethic sustainable & keep at it daily. Your work ethic IS your character!
Once you become a coach, it’s not about you anymore. It’s about your players & their dreams. Not what you want for them, but what they want for themselves. You’re there to help them go as far as they can to reach their potential. Not matter how big/small the dream, it’s theirs!
Years from now, your players may not remember a single game from a particular season or tournament, but they will always remember the experiences they had being a part of your team & having a coaching staff who truly cared about them. Those are the memories that last a lifetime!
Having a coach who believes in you/always stays positive is one thing, but having a coach who TEACHES you to believe in yourself, be a positive force, keep a great attitude is uncommon & underrated. Those are the types of coaches who impact kids, make a difference, change lives!
5 C’s of Success:
Commitment- Don’t shortchange your team, coaches or yourself
Communication- Say what you mean; mean what you say
Caring- Treat others with respect
Competitiveness- Compete in everything
Consistency- Find what works & keep doing it. Hold yourself accountable
Coach the person! The best part of working with kids is forming relationships. Learn about the kids you work with & coach them as people first. Show them you care. Build trust & respect. Then use the game to teach them that the ups & downs of life are a lot more than any sport!
Be your own person: real, authentic & true to yourself. Do great things in the world & for others, but don't rely on what’s popular. Just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it’s always right for you. Follow your own path. Make your own way. Be an inspiration to yourself & others!
The legacy of these movies is that my children's generation will show them to their children. So, you could be watching them in 50 years time, easy. I'll not be here sadly... But Hagrid will." —Robbie Coltrane
No coach or trainer can force you to get better. You must choose to put in purposeful work. Practice before practice. Lead during practice. Then practice more after practice. This game rewards those who’ve put in the time. Getting better is a personal choice, not an obligation!
Great players:
Sacrifice free time
Seek improvement
Train through discomfort
Train purposefully
Have a specific plan
Train consistently
Don’t let failure stop them
Ask questions
Take criticism
Are in great shape
Have many solutions
Watch film
Do more than required
Chart progress
Create a post-performance review that helps you separate your process from the outcome.
One way to do this is to answer same set of questions, no matter the result:
Example:
1. What went well?
2. What did I learn?
3. What will I do better next time?
This one is for Katie, Sarah, and the rest of us. #Please take the time to read, share, and bring awareness to the crisis that is the mental health of collegiate athletes.
