Canada’s worst fire season on record visualized using NASA’s GEOS-FP model and FIRMS fire data. Just unfathomable.
- 18.5 million hectares of forest scorched
- 5% of Canada's forest area burned
- Approx. 200,000 people evacuated
- A total of over 6,500 fires
🌎 ❌ We are crossing more and more planetary boundaries.
Today, six boundaries are crossed. Two more are closing in on transgression.
Decisive policy action can change this as we have shown with the recovery of the ozone layer.

The Bureau of Meteorology has declared that El Niño and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) are underway. Warmer and drier conditions have already been forecast for spring and summer for parts of Australia. Details: https://t.co/j4kNt3qLSZ
Today, two big cities in China, Xi'an and Shanghai, were hit by violent rainstorms. Among them, Shanghai Pudong received 105mm of rainfall in 45min. Xi'an, located in the inland northwest, also experienced 64mm of rainfall in 1 hour, causing severe waterlogging.
As of 12 noon, the 24-hour rainfall at the HKO reached 634mm, making it the second-heaviest rainstorm in history! Hong Kong Stanley Station broke the Hong Kong heavy rain record of 835 mm in 24 hours!
Two important #Antarctica papers came out today from @PIK_Climate:
1) Shows that runaway ice sheet retreat has not started yet
2) Finds that our current level of climate warming is already enough to trigger irreversible retreat if temps remain this high for long enough

Breaking: #HurricaneLee is now a Cat 5 storm, with winds of 160 mph. In 30 hrs it intensified 90 mph, 2-3X the criteria for rapid intensification. In the past 8 years, there have been 8 cat 5’s in the Atl. Comparing 1970-2000 with 2001-2022, cat 5 frequency has tripled! 1/
“The latest data on forest fires confirms what we’ve long feared: Forest fires are becoming more widespread, burning nearly twice as much tree cover today as they did 20 years ago.” https://t.co/xcBtpCuaMV

A testament to how extreme & overwhelming the climate is this summer is, this Record “Shattering” heat dome has been barely covered by the national media. It’s largest US heat dome in recent memory and in a large part of the nation’s middle the most intense, by a long shot. 1/
Reviving the Redwoods https://t.co/uiJGkVD386
The Redwoods Rising project aims to restore old growth redwood forests in California by thinning overgrown forests, using prescribed fires, and undoing damage from decades of logging and reseeding. The project is intended to make the forests more resilient to a hotter and drier climate and to combat the effects of climate change. Redwoods take up and store more carbon than any other tree species, and the project is also aimed at increasing their fire resistance and fostering a vibrant ecosystem. The logging of California's globally singular forest was a free-for-all, and 95% of the old growth was cut.
