To get past 1,700 STEM contacts with the ISS for students, it takes someone on the inside at NASA.
Our person on the inside has been Kenneth, N5VHO (and @RF2Space here). We wish him nothing but the best in retirement when he departs later this year.
73 to N5VHO!
I have officially handed over my duties related to amateur radio on the ISS. I will still be serving as a part time advisor until the end of May 2025. I will no longer have real-time insight to daily operations after that time. It has be a great 20+ years supporting!
FUNcube, the low Earth polar orbiting CUBE Satellite, celebrates its 11th birthday today!
Built by @AmsatUK and launched 11 years ago, it:
✔️Orbits the Earth at a height of 600km
✔️Travels at 27,360kph
✔️Takes just 96mins to complete a full orbit
✔️will have completed more than 59,400 orbits
✔️transmits real-time space data and provides excellent #STEM learning opportunities
RSGB National Radio Centre volunteer Brian, G4BIP, brought in a birthday cake to celebrate the occasion and to share with volunteers and visitors. Brian is also one of the team involved with looking after the FUNcube.

Contacting the @Space_Station via amateur radio can inspire students to explore areas in STEM. Astronauts have answered questions from students on every continent! Earlier this month, @Astro_Suni talked with girls from the Girlguiding organization in the United Kingdom.

I am honoured to have been awarded @AmsatUK 's G3AAJ cup at the annual colloquium last weekend.
I am told this was in particular recognition of my contribution to the public WebSDRs at https://t.co/30lBt3ykP1 and elsewhere. Thanks to all those that have supported these efforts!
Today was my first radio contact of Expedition 72. It’s been 5 years since the last photo, and while a few things have changed (more gray hair and glasses), what hasn’t changed is how much I enjoy getting to answer questions from students all over the world using the station’s ham radio!
We supported an @ARISS_Intl event where @Girlguiding Surrey West County and Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh made contact with the ISS, and spoke to @Astro_Suni. 📡 🛰️
Hear from @astro_meganne, who was on hand to answer extra questions. 👇 #WSW2024
The RSGB was delighted to work with @ARISS_Intl to organise this event and it was an honour that HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh took part in this historic contact. We loved seeing everyone’s faces light up when astronaut @Astro_Suni spoke to them from the @Space_Station
Today is Ada Lovelace Day, which celebrates the achievements of women in STEM. 👩🏽⚕️👷♀️👩🏻🔧👩🏾🚀👩🏿⚕️
Hear from UK @ESA astronaut reserve, @astro_meganne about her inspiring science career and journey to becoming part of ESA's new class of astronauts. 👩🚀

🚀✨ An Out of This World Day! The Duchess of Edinburgh joined 100 Girlguiding members for a live Q&A with astronaut Sunita Williams aboard the International Space Station!
👩🚀🌍 This special radio contact, held at Brooklands Museum, celebrated girls in STEM and gave Girlguides the chance to ask Sunita about life in space – from what she’s been eating to what space smells like!
