Rob Sand selects Dave Muhlbauer, a cattleman and the lone Democrat on the Crawford County Board of Supervisors, as his running mate in the Iowa gubernatorial race.
Crawford County voted for Donald Trump 71%-28% in 2024.
From Manilla to Decorah and every small town in between, Iowans are ready for a new direction and leadership focused on bringing common sense back to state government. That’s why I’m proud to announce I’ve chosen @DaveMuhlbauerIA as my running mate.
Dave & I are focused on getting to work to solve some of our state’s toughest challenges. Like me, Dave knows this isn’t about being a Democrat or a Republican. It’s about being Iowans. #SandMuhlbauer
A few fun tidbits
Wahls' family is from Clayton County in NE Iowa, and you can see some that residual connection
The dark brown dots in Cedar Falls & Ames are campus precincts, but with school out they had <10 votes. OTOH, U of I precincts were actually Turek's best in IC
Iowa Democrats nominated Josh Turek for US Senate by a 25 points margin over Zach Wahls
Turek won with a broad base of support spanning rural, suburban, & urban areas - sweeping every precinct in 77 of 99 counties. Wahls only won in a handful of locales beyond the Iowa City area
You can see both candidates' regional support base - Turek in Western Iowa & Wahls in parts of East Central Iowa
Beyond regionalism, Turek was very strong in both wealthy and Hispanic areas. Wahls limited losses in younger areas, new growth suburbs, and heavily Black precincts
3 of the 4 are running unopposed this cycle. The Chickasaw County Recorder will face a Republican again this year.
The Clay County Attorney result is one of the most impressive overperformances I've seen. He was a first time candidate in a county Obama never won
Here are some Iowa maps of county level Democrats winning their 2022 elections against Republican opponents in super red areas
Who needs national partisanship when you've got random small town personal dynamics determining electoral outcomes? So much more fun
This morning: Poll found Rep. Randy Feenstra trailing businessman Zach Lahn 27%-24% in #IAGov GOP primary. Raises possibility that no one wins 35%, which would force convention to pick nominee.
This afternoon: President Trump endorses Feenstra to shore up congressman's chances.
It looks like the Navajo and Hopi tribes wanted to be in different CDs so badly that Arizona actually had a non-contiguous district in the 1990s
That little circle south of Tuba City in CD3 is a Hopi Reservation exclave surrounded by Navajo Nation and CD6
We have a proud tradition of telling politicians we may vote for you, but we don’t worship you. We put guard rails up around their power to aim it at serving us, not themselves.
Time to renew that tradition by ending the special legal privileges of the Democratic and Republican parties and ending the two-choice system.
Anyway since the Virginia-resident class of conservative journalists and operatives have personally come out on the short end of the stick on this redistricting fight, perhaps they can push their party to negotiate a national gerrymandering ban. Dems are ready to take the call.
In the Wisconsin Supreme Court race, the largest 2015-26 shifts to Dems were in peripheral media markets
Of the 8 markets in WI, the largest swings were in the 3 with a majority out-of-state audience. The smallest shifts were in the 2 biggest markets - Milwaukee & Madison
