The 49ers think Mac Jones can still be an NFL starter.
He is currently backing up Brock Purdy in San Francisco
Per: @ProFootballTalk
“Going back to college, we obviously studied Mac coming out and we thought very highly of him and his skillset as a thrower and the things he did in college,” Kubiak said Friday, via Grant Cohn of https://t.co/cp19losnK8.
“And then obviously as a rookie, what he did in the NFL was very impressive. Mac’s a really good thrower. He stands in the pocket, he’s a strong guy and he’s really smart. And so he’s got a lot of traits that we like for a starting quarterback. And his career has kind of gone up and down a little bit the past couple years, but we saw the same things in Jacksonville that we loved about him as a college prospect, and that really excites us. And he’s doing a great job. And I think Mac’s capable of being a starter in this league. And so he’s going to help us if he needs to.”
Posting one college football clip every day until the start of the season 🏈
When Mac Jones threw a 90-yard BOMB to Jaylen Waddle to start the takeover vs Georgia in 2020 🔥
Mac Jones is an absolute beauty and the Patriots organization failed him.
But if failing Mac Jones and hanging him out to dry leads you to Drake Maye, then you fail Mac Jones in every single timeline.
The two aren't even comparable honestly and you won't find a bigger Mac stan than me. (At least not one who is also reasonable.)
A look at quarterback EPA per play inside and outside the pocket.
Brock Purdy, Matthew Stafford, and Jordan Love all stood out as highly effective in both situations last year.

In a recent episode of @BussinWTB, former Alabama QB Mac Jones discussed what made the 2020 national championship team so special.
He also spoke out on people underestimating the Crimson Tide due to it being considered the “COVID season.”
What are your thoughts? 🤔
🚨 FIVE #49ers who could be playing their final season in San Francisco, per @PeterPanacy
• QB Mac Jones
• WR Christian Kirk
• WR Demarcus Robinson
• C Jake Brendel
• S Ji’Ayir Brown
With a projected cap crunch in 2027, these are the players most likely to move on after the 2026 season. Who would you keep? 🤔👇
Mac Jones was unfortunately a victim of a crumbling dynasty. He's a great QB and could start on many NFL teams.
I'm glad everything happened that led us to Drake Maye, but Mac really doesn't deserve the blame for those down seasons.
Mac Jones pulled up to George Kittle’s barn to train
With the 49ers receivers in town, it appears Brock Purdy and Mac Jones will be throwing to them on George’s football field 🔥
"Do you have a favorite or funniest teammate in your 8 years in the league?"
"Mac Jones. He is a man. He's hilarious... he just loves life. He's the guy you wanna go out with on a Friday night for sure."
"He doesn't look like an athlete."
"No he doesn't at all but it's funny, the guy can run for days... he would always try to beat Fred (Warner in a race), Mac just flips the hat backwards and he's sprinting.
@luke_gifford shares that his funniest teammate after 8 seasons in the National Football League is indeed @MacJones_10 .
