1. Transfer the tens of billions earmarked for net zero to defence and supply chain resilience, to create a major industrial/defence sector, thereby creating skilled jobs in UK, rather than China (as net zero does)
2. Radical tough love welfare reform to get 1m people of working age into work, thereby cutting the welfare bill and increasing the tax base. Coupled with massive expansion of German-class STEM skill apprenticeships.
3. Radical reform of planning laws to stop nimbys/greens from thwarting every major infrastructure development. Put judges/courts in their place when it comes to such matters.
4. Put rocket boosters under high-speed rail link between Leeds-Manchester-Liverpool. Brook no opposition/delay.
5. Unleash North Sea oil/gas + slash energy bills by removing all green levies. New breed of gas-fired and smaller nuke generating stations.
Much more to suggest. But this should be good for starters.
“Net Zero: Let’s make UK energy the most expensive in Europe, shut our factories, destroy jobs and local economies, plaster solar panels over thousands of acres of farmland, spend £billions turning off wind turbines because we can’t use their energy supply, spend £30 billion on carbon capture machines, ban new oil and gas licenses in the North Sea but spend £40billion buying North Sea oil and gas from Norway, blame cow burps, reduce red meat consumption and freeze pensioners so global CO2 drops by 0.0003%. But we will also build hundreds of AI data centres that guzzle natural resources and energy. China’s still building coal plants like it’s 1950 but at least we get to feel superior while the rest of the world laughs over our sheer stupidity. Genius.”
I’ve always never been able to decide which is Britain’s most beautiful bit: North Devon or the Yorkshire Dales. But I’ve just spent the last three days in the Scottish Borders and now I have an answer. God almighty, they’re beautiful. Also, I bought some cows there.
I think I speak for a lot of people when I say this.
For years, Sunday nights meant Top Gear. We’d sit down at 8pm and watch Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May do what they did best.
Now, through Clarkson’s Farm, Jeremy has introduced a whole new generation to the realities of British farming and earned the respect of millions all over again.
He’s made us laugh, he’s frustrated us, and he’s entertained us for decades.
Get well soon, Jezza.
The country is rooting for you. ❤️🇬🇧🙏
So you’ve gone from 8%, no caveats, to a range of 2% to 8% — which is quite a range!!
My own view is that Brexit has had an economic cost, certainly in the short-run, though probably at the lower end of your range.
However even that judgement is muddied by the short-run being complicated by the pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the absurd and costly pursuit, under Labour and the Tories, of net zero, which has given us the highest industrial energy costs in the world and hollowed out what was left of our heavy industries.
So it’s complicated.
But when politicians like you, Ed Davey and others baldly claimed Brexit is costing us £90bn a year (which is what 8% would mean), y’all need to be called out.
Isn't this you happily shaking hands with the Syrian President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led an Al-Qaeda linked terror group which carried out multiple beheadings? Just checking on your tolerance levels for this sort of stuff @Keir_Starmer
Latest thoughts on Sturgeon-Murrell from @TimesRadio — The Times at One with Andrew Neil:
The Nicola Sturgeon—Peter Murrell SNP financial scandal is the gift that keeps on giving.
We now know that Murrell bought 108 loo rolls just 24 hours before his wife told the people of Scotland not to stockpile during the pandemic.
Maybe that’s why Sturgeon couldn’t see the now notorious camper van parked on her mother-in-law’s driveway — her husband had shielded it with the loo rolls.
She did admit to seeing the expensive new e-Jag her husband also bought with embezzled cash — how could she not, there’s a picture of her walking past it on their driveway? — but never thought to mention it. Well, we’re all used to flash new cars suddenly appearing on our driveways.
We’re also assured by Sturgeon that she never really clocked the expensive coffee machines in her kitchen — apparently there were several — because she was rarely in the kitchen. Then we were reminded that on Desert Island Discs her choice of a luxury item was — you guessed it — a fancy coffee machine.
We also learned that when Sturgeon said she had fully co-operated with the police when they brought her in for questioning, what she meant was she’d said ‘no comment’ to every question the police asked. Can’t wait for that bit in a future docu-drama.
She was then allowed to provide written answers but, strangely, never brought back to be interrogated about them by the police. Let’s hope we can all expect that consideration at the hands of Police Scotland.
Rather more serious questions remain unanswered about the SNP’s finances.
What exactly happened to the £600,000 or so the SNP had raised to fight a second referendum that never happened? After the May 2021 Holyrood elections the SNP’s coffers were bare. So did it all go on that?
It was in June 2021 that Murrell loaned the SNP £107,000 to help with cash flow. Half was never paid back. Only in SNP-land could you embezzle your party, then give it an interest-free loan.
Then there’s the £6m the SNP received from taxpayers. Murrell signed off on that. Was any of it used to boost Amazon’s profits?
The embezzling lasted for over a decade. Was it allowed to fester in plain sight because anybody who raised the slightest criticism of the party’s finances was bullied and threatened into silence?
One senior apparatchik resigned because he was refused sight of the party’s accounts. Well, why should he? He was only the party treasurer.
Current First Minister John Swinney asks: ‘what more do we need to look into?’ Rather a lot is the obvious answer.
This morning Peter Murrell, who pleaded guilty to embezzlement, appeared in handcuffs at the High Court in Edinburgh.
It was a short session in which the prosecution gave the details of his £400,000 spending spree with embezzled SNP money using a party charge card linked to its bank account.
Most of this is already public. Murrell said nothing. He will have his chance when he’s sentenced on June 23rd before which he can make a plea of mitigation.
I wonder what he’ll say! Sturgeon has thrown him under the bus. Will he return the favour?
The West has created an utterly evil state religion where an accusation of “racism” is the gravest offense that can be committed, even worse than rape or murder!
So if police show up at a crime scene and a British boy is bleeding out and an immigrant says the British boy is racist the cops will cuff the dying British boy.
It seems to me that Islamic demands for 'respect' is simply a way of trying to impose their culture on other people
Do they 'respect' British traditions ?
No, they don't.
I fear I have been too hard on Nicola Sturgeon for not seeing the camper van parked on her mother-in-law’s driveway. I now understand her husband hid it behind 108 loo rolls. Apologies.
Let’s nail this state lie once and for all. The government is NOT increasing defence spending by £270 billion during this parliament. It is a ludicrous claim.
Yet one Keir Starmer made to Parliament’s Liaison Committee in March: Labour, he said, will “spend £270 billion MORE (my emphasis) than we would otherwise have done on defence” in this Parliament.
Starmer has always been weak on facts and figures but even by his standards this is a massive porkie.
This is the truth: £270 billion is the total cumulative projected defence spending for the four financial years from 2025/26 up to and including 2028/29 lumped together.
It is NOT even the cumulative increase in defence spending during these years.
Nobody (except perhaps Gordon Brown) speaks about public spending in this way, unless the intention is massively to mislead.
By 28/29 defence spending is projected to be £13 billion a year more than at the start of the period. So not exactly £270 billion. But I guess if you’re going to lie you might as well make it a whopper.
UK law:
If you are Muslim you can punch a police offer in the face, bang your first cousin and claim benefits for your fourth wife (also a family number)
If you are white, you get prison time for tweeting how pissed off you are about it.
