We Indians have always had a strange preference for nautanki over real work. Demanding resignations after every blunder, and offering them as proof of accountability, is among the biggest examples of it.

Lal Bahadur Shastri resigned as Railway Minister after major train accidents. But did his resignation stop train accidents?

Decades later, Nitish Kumar also resigned as Railway Minister, taking moral responsibility after a train accident.

Resigning is easy. Staying, taking responsibility, fixing what went wrong, and bringing lasting change to the system is the harder job. That, to me, is true remorse and accountability.

But in a country where symbolism often gets rewarded more than outcomes, you are sometimes better off riding a buffalo to your village and pleasing everyone than building the road that transforms the village and arriving there in a Mercedes.

We often applaud the spectacle of sacrifice more than the difficult, unglamorous work of actually fixing things.
