🌍 Supporting Ethiopia’s national efforts on climate mobility 🇪🇹
Over two days in Addis Ababa, I participated in the National Coordination Mechanism (NCM) workshop conducted under the IGAD–GIZ Mobility in the Context of Disasters and Climate Change (MoDiaC) Project.
Key outcomes included identifying priority national actions, strengthening institutional coordination across migration, disaster risk management, and climate sectors, and advancing a national baseline and roadmap to address climate-induced mobility and disaster displacement.
Important progress toward stronger national and cross-border coordination on climate mobility.

In #AddisAbaba, the National Coordination Mechanism on Migration (NCM) Meeting on Human Mobility in the Context of Disaster & Climate Change (MoDiac) in Ethiopia is now underway, bringing together government officials, IGAD experts, and partners to strengthen coordination, planning, and response to climate and disaster-induced mobility.

The meeting is focusing on deepening understanding of the links between climate change, disasters, and human mobility, strengthening institutional coordination, and advancing a national roadmap to integrate these dynamics into Ethiopia’s migration and development frameworks, while identifying capacity-building needs and cross-border priorities.

Participants include members of the NCM, National Agencies on disaster management and climate adaptation, IGAD technical experts, development partners including @IOMEthiopia @giz_gmbh & @UNHCREthiopia, as well as academia, civil society, and research institutions.

📍Bridging Migration, Displacement, and Climate Mobility policies in South Sudan | 2 – 4 March 2026

In Juba, South Sudan, the @IGADsecretariat is convening a Joint National Coordination Meeting of the National Technical Committee on Durable Solutions (NTC-DS) and the National Coordination Mechanism (NCM) on Migration

The meeting aims to strengthen national coordination, policy coherence, and institutional collaboration between the NTC and NCM to address displacement, migration, and climate-induced mobility through integrated durable solutions and migration governance approaches.

Addressing the meeting, the IGAD Head of Mission to South Sudan Dr. @Vickyanib01 emphasized that mixed migration flows, protracted displacement situations, climate mobility and the pressures on host communities require comprehensive, inclusive, and forward-looking approaches.

📍Building Disaster Risk Reduction Capacity Across the IGAD Region

🗓️ 16-18 December, 2025 | Machakos, Kenya

The @IGADSecretariat has launched a regional engagement under the Human Mobility in the Context of Disaster and Climate Change (MoDiaC) initiative, bringing together Disaster Risk Management experts from IGAD Member States to strengthen their capacity in managing climate-related mobility risks.

The objective of the Experts Meeting is to strengthen understanding of the linkages between disaster risk management, climate change, and human mobility by sharing regional best practices, equipping focal points with risk assessment and early-warning tools, fostering collaboration, and identifying opportunities for integration under the #MoDIaC framework.

The IGAD Head of Mission to Kenya, Dr @FatumaIAdan representing the Executive Secretary, said that strengthening Member States’ capacity to manage climate-related mobility risks protects communities and builds resilience across the IGAD region.

The #MoDiaC intervention is implemented across #IGADMigration and @IGAD_CPAC programming.

🌍 Advancing Climate Mobility Forecasting

Happening this week at @ICPAC, Nairobi, 🇰🇪
experts from @RefugeesAfrica, @IOM_EHSA, @giz_gmbh, @UNEP_Africa , @UNHABITAT, and IGAD Member States are collaborating to strengthen data-driven early warning systems for climate-induced displacement across Africa.

Millions of people across the continent are being forcibly displaced by both slow-onset and sudden-onset disasters, increasingly driven by climate change. Projections indicate that climate-related displacement will continue to rise in the coming years. Yet, those affected by climate-induced mobility remain largely absent from statistical analyses, as the complex interplay between climate change and displacement is difficult to capture.

.@IGAD_ICPAC team kicked off #Day2 of the Regional Policy Dialogue on Climate Change and Mobility in Addis Ababa, 🇪🇹 showcasing how enhanced analytical and forecasting capacities can provide the necessary evidence for Countries to develop comprehensive strategies, prepare vulnerable communities, and build long-term resilience.

Through the #MoDiAC intervention, IGAD is strengthening the technical capacity of ICPAC for analysis and forecasting climate-induced human mobility in the region.

During the mission debrief, the Executive Secretary emphasized the importance of enhanced coordination on IGAD’s core priorities, particularly in addressing emerging global trends in peace and security, inclusivity, and technological transformation.
