Thrilled to share we've been awarded an ERC Starting Grant! We'll work across mice and humans to ask how the brain decides which evidence to trust. Thank you @ERC_Research, the panel, and everyone who helped train me. Hiring from September 2027 โ https://t.co/1pUiHIL2GA #ERCStG
๐ฃ Good news! ๐ฃ

1/ Dear all, I am hiring a PhD student and/or postdoc to join my group at the @UnivHelsinkiCS & ELLIS Institute Finland!
The topic is Amortized Probabilistic Machine Learning for Decision Making with applications in healthcare and scientific modelling.
DL September 21
See ๐
Happy to be back!
Europe *is* attractive to researchers. More stable positions would let more of us go after the difficult questions rather than the next low-hanging fruit.
So many great projects didn't make it this year โ I hope they all find a home!

Why do researchers #ChooseEurope? ๐ช๐บ๐ฌ
In our recent ERC Starting Grants competition, 21 researchers currently based outside Europe were selected for funding; 20 of whom are currently based in the United States.

Data-driven model discovery ๐Model-driven experiment selection.
For mechanistically-interpretable models!
New work from @GoogleDeepMind Neuroscience Lab, led by @EltetoNoemi
New study from our lab, in collab with @erlichlab
We developed novel frameworks to study multi-agent decision-making in mice.
Mice flexibly shift their value preference under social competition, by integrating real-time self and opponent information!

Very excited to have posted a new preprint on my PhD work in the @brody_lab where we show that rats can achieve near-optimal time investment in a confidence-guided waiting task https://t.co/ogMkGIMN6w.
The second half of the CSN Symposium also included talks from BU postdocs Mai-Anh Vu (@MaiAnh_T) and Maxime Maheu (@maheump) and PhD student Brad Rauscher.
Can task-irrelevant sounds be used to manipulate phasic arousal?
We address this question in our new preprint out now on @biorxivpreprint https://t.co/QFCmWsmgIi

A word for prospective sys-neuro postdocs: APPLY! โฌ๏ธ
I have extensively discussed with @AnnDuan2, @erlichlab, lab members & visited the labs. They've built a friendly environment (most important) where you'll clearly do groundbreaking research (bonus: at @SWC_Neuro)
Please RT!
@erlichlab and my lab are jointly recruiting 2 fully-funded postdocs (theorists and experimentalists) to work on multi-agent economic decision-making, towards understanding cognition in psychiatric conditions. Come work with us at the amazing @SWC_Neuro!
Excited about our long-brewing paper exploring dynamics in multi-regional neural circuits in a delayed movement task. Driven by@esthersselva, @yiliu021, and including Jennifer Colonell, Nuo Li and @ShaulDr and others (the MAP collaboration): https://t.co/TeruxjeOvc (1/7)
New publication with Dan Dombeck: "A robot-rodent interaction arena with adjustable spatial complexity for ethologically relevant behavioral studies" https://t.co/oIxbl5cS2K.

Decision-making dynamics are predicted by arousal and uninstructed movements: https://t.co/0sHxAR4XqG
Mice have distinct performance states during auditory and visual tasks, and optimal states can be predicted by intermediate (arousal) levels of pupil and movement.
๐ขI am looking for a postdoc to work on the cognitive neuroscience of self-beliefs at @InstitutCerveau ๐คฉ๐ง โจ - details here: https://t.co/ndEFImMTls informal inquiries are welcome & RT is appreciated ๐
@msokoletsky One question that I think arises when comparing 2AC and detection tasks with the dโ metric is whether to scale the 2AC dโ (but not the detection dโ) by a 1/sqrt(2) factor as prescribed by Macmillan & Creelmann 2004 (see Eq. 6.16 p. 161, Eq. 7.2 p. 168 & Fig. 6.5 p. 148).
@msokoletsky We have never tried it but I expect that it would be quite challenging to train a mouse to restrain from licking (in no-go trials) in response to a single, moving lick port (as also suggested by this paper: https://t.co/L3E8SCenKD).
