@unclebobmartin It’s a false dichotomy. Nobody builds a 'wholly negative' suite. TDD defines intent, and mutation analysis audits its blind spots. Once a gap is exposed, that test becomes an intentional regression contract. Discarding it just invites regressions back in.
@msrivastav13@unclebobmartin Running mutation analysis is what is slow, not executing the resulting unit test. TDD specifies behavior; mutation audits assertion strength. Using both creates an airtight suite without meaningful CI overhead. They complement each other, not compete.
@msrivastav13@unclebobmartin Deleting mutant-killing tests throws away regression protection. If a mutant exposed a blind spot, that test is what prevents it from resurfacing. Unit tests add milliseconds in CI—sacrificing safety to save runtime is premature optimization.
@msrivastav13@unclebobmartin Reducing tests purely to "mutant killers" misses TDD's point. Tests capture intent and design contracts, not just code coverage. Discarding working tests to eliminate harmless redundancy is an expensive anti-pattern.
@martinfowler TDD can over-constrain agents around the red/green cycle, while too much freedom can lead to over-implementation.
We’ve had good results giving agents functional test cases upfront and validating against them.
Maybe the key is defining what to expect and how to evaluate it.
@VadimYuryev Doesn’t this lease/upgrade model risk tanking Apple’s resale values, though? Why would someone pay $1,500 upfront for a used Mac when they can just pay $58/mo for the latest model?
