The Press Club of India is shocked and dismayed at the Delhi Police's actions against and treatment of journalists during the protests at Jantar Mantar against the chief election commissioner on Friday and Saturday.

Behaviour of this kind cannot be normalised in a democracy.

Journalists must be allowed to work freely, without fear, and document those who gather to raise various issues. That this is not being allowed even at the heart of the national capital does not bode well for the trajectory of media freedom in India.

The Delhi Police (@DelhiPolice) must immediately act on the female journalist's complaint and ensure that it gives mediapersons the space to do their jobs without having to face aggression and threats.

The Congress IT cell really screwed up yesterday. The party has lost a lot of momentum gained from some good work, executed on the back off the exemplary action by the Cockroach Janta Party. Instead of building on the enormous public response to CJP’s Mumbai protests, it chose to attack CJP and amplify far less consequential issues.

From beginning to finally look mature and formidable, it came across as a bitter, insecure and needlessly competitive ecosystem. We all saw how, from the start, it refused to protest with the CJP. But these scathing attacks now suggest a lack of confidence and grace.

Come on, guys. This is not the time to compete with a movement that is clearly striking a chord with people. Don’t squander your own momentum trying to undermine theirs.

I wrote a post appreciating Neha Bora yesterday, and I’m going to say it again today. I saw her escape from the police at least six times yesterday when they tried to detain her, and at least three times today, right in front of me. Every time they detained her, she questioned the female police officers and gave them the most sarcastic replies without ever losing her cool.

I’m wary of leaders in this country, but so far, I’m in complete awe of this woman. She got injured today too. Police officers were literally pulling her from all directions, but she refused to give up or move towards the detention bus. She’s the kind of young leader these CJP thugs can’t become in their lifetime.
