For those in public health, it is time to seriously work with the affected African countries and relevant supranational organisations and help reduce the burden of mpox. It is not acceptable to think this will never be a problem here, or that mpox is a mild disease.
🚨🚨Pre-print alert!
Check our latest study on the biological properties of the monkeypox virus (MPXV) that caused the 2022 global outbreak.
We reveal differential host responses and virulence relative to its endemic ancestor.

This is relevant to the ongoing mpox outbreak in central Africa, this time caused by a clade Ib virus, which also seems to be accumulating APOBEC3-driven mutations, although we don’t know yet what consequences this is having on the virus.
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join an MRC-funded project on #mpox#vaccines. Please get in touch if interested.

This year, countries have battled outbreaks of mpox, Marburg, cholera, dengue, avian influenza, while the climate crisis is driving their spread to new areas.
On International Day of Epidemic Preparedness, we remind all countries that shared threats demand a shared response. The only way to create a safer world is together. #PandemicAccord
