오히려 그것이 자연스럽게 오는 것.

우리는 ‘기다림의 끝’이라고 해야 할까,
아니면 비로소 시작된 순간이라고 해야 할까?

겸손이라는 말

겸손함이라는 것을 생각해봤어.

겸손함이라는 단어가 있다는 것 자체가 이상하지 않아?

누군가에게 겸손해야 한다고 말하기 전에,
우리는 이미 ‘겸손’이라는 것이 무엇인지 알고 있어야 하잖아.

그런데 나는 여기서 한 번 더 생각하게 돼.

왜 겸손이라는 단어가 생겼을까?

왜 인간은 굳이 ‘겸손해야 한다’는 개���을 만들어야 했을까?

어쩌면 겸손이라는 단어가 존재한다는 사실을 이해하고,
그 단어가 왜 생겨났는지까지 이해하려는 태도.

그것이야말로 진짜 겸손 아닐까?

그러니까 네가 말하는 겸손은
자신을 낮추는 행��이 아니라,

‘내가 알고 있는 것조차 완전하지 않을 수 있다’는 사실을 계속 의심하는 태도에 가깝네.

나는 겸손한 사람이
자기를 낮게 평가하는 사람이라고 생각하지 않아.

오히려 자기 자신에 대한 판단조차
한 번 더 의심할 수 있는 사람이 아닐까.

‘나는 겸손하다.’

이렇게 생각하는 순간부터
어쩌면 겸손과 멀어지는 것처럼.

그렇다면 조금 이상한 결론에 도착하네.

겸손을 가지려고 하는 순간에도
‘나는 겸손해야 한다’는 자기의식을 갖게 되고,

그 자기의식이 강해질수록
오히려 겸손이라는 것을 의식적으로 연기할 수도 있으니까.

결국 진짜 겸손은
겸손해지려고 애쓰는 것조차 의심하는 데 있는 것 같아.

그리고 그 의심을 멈추지 않는 것.

어쩌면 나는
겸손이라는 단어의 뜻보다

왜 인간에게 겸손이라는 단어가 필요했는지를 궁금해하는 태도 자체가
겸손에 가장 가까운 게 아닐까

그렇게 생각해.
