More research on impacts of vehicle size. For the vast majority of use cases, such large vehicles are not necessary. In most cases short term hire is more efficient when they are needed, and reduces the risk of driving them when they aren’t required.

@shepherdmg Yes, objectively much more room. There are issues with car bloat that genuinely come from a safety perspective (door thickness in a modern vehicle now accommodates airbags and side impact protection, adding 4-6” width), but most ‘softroaders’ have less room. This was my Dad’s:

@shepherdmg Yes! And what happened to the sensibly sized estate car that Dads always seemed to have in the eighties? You could own a little EV for day to day use and rent a lovely estate car for big jobs and family holidays!

@shepherdmg As ever, there’s a bit of complexity here - the front end of cars have been redesigned for safety, so the rounded nose of the past probably won’t return. The main problem is the machismo and the ‘I’m all right Jack’ feeling of being in a car which is patently much too big!

Checking your eyesight regularly is essential. Eyesight changes are incremental and often go unnoticed, but can lead to missing hazards such as vulnerable road users. Easy test: look around a car park and find the furthest reg you can read, pace the distance <28 call an optician!
