@BridgetAnneCar1@laurarw Social media has already impacted elections and that can be very dangerous for the state of politics today. I see this getting worse before it gets better.
@emily_t22@laurarw#ucengl2074 This problem, while the most visible in the case of celebrities, is present for many citizens in every-day life. For stalking victims and those in abusive situations, the internet provides location in a way that could easily be manipulated to become unsafe.
@chlograced@laurarw#ucengl2074 hazing and other dangerous traditions have always existed for teenagers to flex their newfound independence. with the internet, however, i worry that these challenges are appealing to younger and younger groups who may be harmed by it.
@JoshieDev@laurarw#ucengl2074 mental illness is increasing in numbers, but i don't know whether this is due to an increase in awareness or an increase in symptoms. is the internet bringing community and language to people who previous suffered alone?
@juliafunk01@laurarw Targeted content in general makes me feel really uncomfortable and invaded upon. In advertising, I've come to expect it. But it really starts to creep me out through things like Tiktok, when my guard is let down. Targeted ads makes me feel like more of a consumer than a person.
@Kellie_UC@laurarw@laurarw#ucengl2074 I am hesitant to say that VR could totally replace the muscle strength and memory that physical practice can promote, but I could understand how VR could help with some heady aspects of the game such as strategy. It wouldn't be serve as a stand in.
@NicoleAnnNewman@BusinessInsider@laurarw I think the metaverse isn't very popular right now because it is new and not very intuitive, but I can see a future where people interact with something similar very frequently
@ellabailey922@laurarw#ucengl2074 I think misinformation can be extremely common on social media, and it can become dangerous extremely quickly. There are many examples of conspiracies that have grown extremely powerful because of the internet.
@Maddiemmaureen@laurarw Social media can be used as a megaphone, and it can bypass traditional forms of media that civilians needed to use previously to make their voices heard. Social media can be helpful in activism and organizing, because it makes people accessible.
@MajorBeezle@laurarw I chose not to watch the video because I don't know if i'm ready to watch it. social media can make acts of violence feel immediate in a way that's both powerful and frightening. As a user, this post has the power to make me pay attention.
@KendallxWright@laurarw I don't think theres any form of media that will operate in exactly the same way. Social media is so unique in its immediacy and high speed that I have trouble envisioning anything replacing it.
@yung_aaron_t @laurarw The idea of NFTs seems novel, which might bring people into finance who may have not been previously interested. However, I don't believe they have the relevance that they did a few months ago. I don't understand the appeal.
@audreyystring@laurarw I think it can get really complicated to have your whole life digitized forever, and I think we will continue to see those consequences as young people become our future community members and elected officials. It's a scary gray area.
#ucengl2074@laurarw With so much of our lives and jobs being moved to social media, how can we reconcile its convenience with its effects on mental health? Is it possible to use social media without breeding comparison? https://t.co/BMO4NGjgQh
@emgirdler @LauraW #ucengl2074 I think that brands have gone from extravagant, aspirational/luxury content, to a more stripped-down form of content that aims to be relatable to a wider audience. Experiencing a mass tragedy has forced companies to appear empathetic.
@KET2033 @laurarw#ucengl2074 I try not to use social media to aid my career, but it is sometimes inevitable. because of social media's permanence and lack of privacy, it can be scary to think of a future employer tracking your digital footprint.
@Abbey_UC@laurarw#ucengl2024 I feel that businesses often hope to be perceived as genuine in their pursuits, which ironically leaves them feeling more artificial than ever, with brands' real motives (driven by capital) often hidden in order to appear more "authentic."
@laurarw I'm confident in my social media literacy, but I think I would struggle using it in a corporate context in order to speak for a company. Things like social selling and intelligence software wouldn't feel comfortable for me to use.
