The United States has just vetoed a Brazilian resolution at the Security Council calling for a humanitarian pause to Israel's relentless bombing of 2 million Palestinians, half of whom are children, trapped in Gaza without water, gas and electricity.

The resolution includes a condemnation of the "heinous terrorist attacks by Hamas" and a demand for "the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages."

The pause was to allow "full, rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access for UN humanitarian agencies."

Results of the vote:

Yes: Brazil, France, Malta, Japan, Ghana, Gabon, Ecuador, China, Albania, UAE, Switzerland, Mozambique

Abstained: Russia, UK

No: USA
