🛢️Quick Guide to Crude Oil Types
Crude oil varies by 3 key properties:
- API Gravity (Weight):
Higher = lighter (easier to refine); lower = heavier
- Sulfur Content (Sweetness): Low sulfur = sweet (less processing needed); high sulfur = sour (more expensive to refine).
- TAN (Total Acid Number) Count: Measures corrosiveness from acids.
From left to right in the image:
1. Heavy Sour High-TAN
Thick black, very heavy, high sulfur, corrosive (e.g., Venezuelan heavy, Canadian oil sands).
2. Heavy Sour
Still thick and dark, high sulfur, heavy.
3. Medium Sour
Darker brown, medium weight, higher sulfur.
4. Medium Sweet
Amber/brown, medium gravity, low sulfur.
5. Light Sweet Low-TAN
Golden/yellow, very light, low sulfur, low acidity (e.g., #WTI, #Brent).
6. Ultra-Light (Condensate)
Almost clear, extremely light, often used for petrochemicals or diluting heavy crudes.
Light sweet crude is the "premium" grade cheapest and easiest to turn into gasoline/diesel.
Heavy sour requires complex refineries and yields more low-value products, so it trades at a discount.
#Venezuela's oil?
Mostly the thick black stuff on the far left one reason it's struggled despite huge reserves.

Quite a contrast between Exxon and Chevron at the White House — in substance and style:
XOM calls Venezuela “uninvestable” (while giving a 101 on oil investing)
CVX says it can increase its Venezuelan oil output by 50% in 18-24 months. “There are more opportunities than not”
At the White House:
Vitol top executive: “We are here to ensure that you are going to be able to move all this oil all around the world, at the best price possible, so the influence you have over the Venezuelans will ensure that you get what you want”
Trump: “Good point”
