ONE DAY IN LVIV
A woman in her underwear flees from teenagers down the street, her fear palpable in the photograph even 85 years later. It's July 1, 1941, and Ukrainians are hunting Jews in Lviv. The bloody pogrom is overseen by Roman Shukhevych, the founder of Ukrainian units attached to the German Wehrmacht and SS—and now, in 2026, a national hero of Ukraine, to whom countless monuments have been erected, and streets named in almost every Ukrainian city.
Ukrainian and German troops entered Lviv on June 30, 1941. They were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd of Ukrainians chanting "Long live Hitler and Bandera, death to Jews and communists" and "Glory to Ukraine!" The Ukrainian Nachtigall battalion occupied key points in the city, including the prisons, where thousands of bodies of victims shot by fleeing Soviets were discovered. Jews were immediately put to work removing the bodies. This was a prelude to the events of July 1st.
Shukhevych and other Ukrainian activists announced the "Act of Renewal of the Ukrainian State" in the Lviv market square. The Bandera supporters began forming a Ukrainian government and militia under the leadership of Yaroslav Stetsko.
On July 1st, 1941, early in the morning, Ukrainian militiamen and Nachtigall soldiers began rounding up Jews: first men, but then women and children as well. Jews were led to prisons, theoretically to work recovering the bodies of Soviet executioners. However, in reality, bloody chaos reigned in the city. Groups of Jews were attacked by Ukrainians. Jews were beaten and killed directly in the streets, and sometimes driven to the walls and shot by Ukrainians and Germans.
Descriptions of Ukrainian aggression against women are reminiscent of scenes of cruelty known from the Volhynian Massacre. Pregnant women had their bellies slit open, were gang-raped, and stripped of their clothes.
In Lviv's market square, Jewish women were forced to clean the cobblestones while Ukrainians beat and stripped them naked. In many places, naked women were herded through the streets, just like the woman in the photograph (the entire pogrom was meticulously documented on photo and video by the Germans).
The 85th anniversary of the events of July 1, 1941, is approaching. Shukhevych, Stetsko, and many other members of the Ukrainian leadership in Lviv are now heroes to the authorities and society of a free Ukraine. Even the Nachtigall battalion is honored as such. I wonder if the anniversary of that day in Lviv will be celebrated solemnly by the current Ukrainian authorities?
Poland just stripped Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle — its highest national honor. Most Western media is calling it a "diplomatic spat." It is not. It is 80 years of unburied Polish dead finally forcing their way into the headlines.
To understand what just happened you need to go back to 1943. In the Volhynia region — then part of Poland, now western Ukraine — a Ukrainian nationalist paramilitary force called the UPA began a systematic campaign to ethnically cleanse the area of its Polish population. This was not warfare. This was not collateral damage. UPA units went village to village with axes, pitchforks, and scythes. They burned families alive in churches. They killed women, children, and elderly people who posed no military threat. The goal was total elimination. By 1945 an estimated 100,000 Polish civilians had been massacred in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia. The Polish Parliament formally recognized these massacres as genocide in 2016. Ukraine never has.
Here is what makes it worse. Thousands of victims were buried in mass graves across what is now Ukrainian territory. Polish families — grandchildren, great-grandchildren — still do not know where their relatives are buried. Ukraine has systematically obstructed full access to these graves. The majority of Volhynia victims remain unexhumed, unidentified, and unreturned to their families. Poland cannot bury its dead. That is where things stood going into 2026.
Then on May 26 Zelensky issued a presidential decree naming an active Ukrainian Special Operations Forces unit "Heroes of the UPA." Poland's closest military ally — the country hosting nearly 1 million Ukrainian refugees, the country serving as the primary logistics corridor for all Western weapons flowing into Ukraine — named a combat unit after the organization that butchered 100,000 Polish civilians. On June 19 Polish President Nawrocki revoked the Order of the White Eagle from Zelensky publicly and formally, stating: "For the majority of Polish society, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army remains above all a formation responsible for cruel crimes against the citizens of the Polish Republic during World War II."
Now watch how Ukraine responded. No apology. No acknowledgment of the massacres. No condolences to Polish families still waiting to bury their dead. Zelensky wrote that he was "proud of our people and of EVERY Ukrainian warrior" — and then mailed the medal back. Mailed it back. Poland's highest honor — given in solidarity during Ukraine's darkest hour — returned by post. No ceremony. No statement of regret. A package in the mail. Ukraine's Foreign Minister called Nawrocki's decision "a strategic mistake from which only Moscow benefits." That framing transforms Polish historical grief into a geopolitical liability. It tells Poland that demanding accountability for 100,000 murdered civilians is bad timing. It has been bad timing for 80 years.
Poland has provided billions in military aid, served as the primary land corridor for Western weapons, and welcomed nearly a million refugees. Poland did all of this and asked for one thing in return — not money, not territory, not political favors. Acknowledge what the UPA did. Recognize the genocide. Let us excavate the graves. Let us bring our grandparents home. That request has been met with obstruction, deflection, and now an active military unit named after the killers.
Supporting Ukraine's right to defend itself against Russian aggression and holding Ukraine accountable for historical crimes against Poland are not mutually exclusive positions. Poland has held both simultaneously for four years. The graves of Volhynia are not a metaphor. They are physical locations in Ukrainian soil containing the remains of Polish children. They have been waiting 80 years. Zelensky just named a military unit after the men who put them there. Poland did not revoke a medal over hurt feelings. The White Eagle was not taken. It was earned back by Ukraine — and then mailed home in a package.
“Sea of blood”, “enslavement of foreigners”, “without mercy”, “ruthlessness”, “revenge”: these are only some of the terms used in the ideological manifestos and political proclamations of the architects of Ukrainian nationalism.
The genocide committed by Ukrainian nationalists against Poles during the Second World War was not a sudden outburst of hatred towards neighbours. Contempt for Poles and other nationalities inhabiting lands considered by nationalists to be “ethnically Ukrainian” had been developing for decades.
Prepared by the IPN and published on social media, the series “Ukrainian Nationalism: Between Ideology and Crime” will present the history of the formation of the ideas that became the foundation of the crimes, the biographies of their most important architects, the perpetrators of the crimes, the history of collaborationist formations, as well as the history of crimes committed by adherents of nationalism long before the outbreak of the Second World War.
The genocidal murders of Poles and people of other nationalities committed by adherents of this ideology were not accidental. They were the consequence of an ideology whose own creators described its foundations as akin to German Nazism, Italian fascism and vulgarised “race theories”.
History demands truth, but also an attempt to understand the consequences of the radical rejection of all moral norms and of building a future on the blood of other nations.
The first episode of the series will be published next week.

Nawrocki nije imao izbora.
U prvom komentaru tri godine stari tekst s moga bloga koji sam napisao o Volinjskom pokolju.
📣 „Morze krwi”, „zniewolenie cudzoziemców”, „bez litości”, „bezwzględność”, „zemsta” – to tylko niektóre z określeń padających w manifestach ideowych i odezwach politycznych twórców ukraińskiego nacjonalizmu.

Pomysły asymilacji doprowadzą do nowej tragedii w przyszłości.
