Facebook changed its name to Meta but Snap Spectacles is by FAR the farthest along when it comes to building something that looks like a metaverse
A 🧵 with examples:
We tell young people in our society that end of the rainbow is retirement at 65.
We ought to tell them that "there is going to be this short but beautiful golden window from roughly age 3 to roughly age 12 where your kids are not only easy (comparatively to bottles & diapers), but are going to be these beautiful little creatures and it will pain your heart to be away from them for too long. So, prepare in your 20's, financially and career wise, to build that flexibility into that chapter of your life".
You don't get another shot at living the "golden window". And, for me, leaning hard into that golden window has made everything else in my life feel fairly insignificant in comparison. I have made plenty of mistakes as a father, but what I won't have is the regret of having been distracted and absent from these formative years. In some cases, that has required financial sacrifices (declining a particular career opportunity that would have required relocation), but I personally have zero regrets.
I also hear from some ambitious & successful people with a 4 year old that say "I've lost my ambition, I am so immersed in fatherhood". At least for me, and a number of my friends, it comes back. You can't keep an ambitious person down and if you have the fire, hanging at a playground on too many Tuesday afternoons is going to feel like torture after too long.
My three boys are approaching 13, 11 & 9, and it's much different than 7, 5 & 3. This summer, for example, they slept until 11am and I hard an unencumbered 6am-12pm to work (being on PT helps), then got another great window 7-11pm, but was able to be present in the heart of the day, then weeks when they were at basketball camp, etc. It gets easier, your time frees up again (there's a sadness to that too), but I'm back to working as intensely as I did pre-kids just because my day to day presence requires fewer hours than it did before (also, my wife is just superbly wonderful). And that is the beautiful gift of entrepreneurship (or at least my sort of business), the ability to deliver still a high level of output but work that around your life rather than the opposite.
TLDR, grind before, and grind after. Prepare for the golden window.
@tferriss It takes a decade of 80 hour weeks to build a good restaurant or the largest tech company in the world.
If you plan on working hard no matter what, then your cost is fixed. So might as well swing big.
Two guys meet for coffee.
One is worth $50,000,000.
The other is worth $50,000.
Society would say the first guy is more successful… without knowing anything about their lives.
It seems absurd to pass that sort of judgement, and yet…
You and I fall into that trap every day:
—We idolize the rich and famous without knowing anything about their personal lives.
—We use those same narrow criteria to measure our own success.
Most people have never taken the time to define success for themselves. So they inherit society's definition.
I created a simple exercise called The Ideal End State to help you with that.
You simply bullet out your best life, with no constraints. Paint a vivid picture that can serve as your North Star, guiding decisions.
Here’s my Ideal End State. You’ll notice that there’s no net worth number on it. Nothing about fame or follower count.
I’ve gone through this exercise with dozens of people, from billionaires to broke people. It turns out that most of us want the same things:
Vibrant health
Freedom and control
Deep, intimate relationships
Adventure and meaningful experiences
Most of those things don’t require $50,000,000.
But they do require clarity.
P.S. A great life isn’t a birthright, it’s a privilege that it earned. It took me decades to get there. But one things’s for sure: you’ll never reach your Ideal End State if you don’t define it.
Everyone is always rooting for you. Your parents want you to be a great son. Wife wants you to be a great husband. Your boss wants you to be a slam dunk hire. Every first date you’ve ever been on they’ve been rooting for you to get laid. Every time you started to tell a joke people hoped it would have a hilarious punch line. Your proximity to anyone is a reflection of themself, meaning the deck is never stacked against you, and your failures are completely your own

This is the pinnacle of all sports plays:
- Coach grinded for years, worked for peanuts before getting his shot. Infinite swag. "I win, Google me."
- Losingest team in CFB history. Now 15-0 and playing for a natty. Biggest turnaround ever.
- QB grew up in Miami. Tried to walk on but they passed. Same team that roughed him up last year. Time for revenge.
- 4th Down. Game on the line. QB draw. The unlikeliest of Heisman winners rushes past the first down marker, gets hit, uses god or whatever to stay up, diving touchdown, clearly in, no replay. Crowd explodes.
- Cut to his parents in the stands. Mother with MS in a wheelchair going nuts. Father stays seated the entire game to comfort her. One arm with a fist in the air, one arm around his wife.
- Coach asked what he's going to do after winning the national championship: "I'm gonna have a beer."
Mic drop.
This is a simulation with all attributes turned up to max.
I internalized the idea-seriousness spectrum, and it made life a lot easier when I added the sort of qualification you mentioned. I even started using the 4 “type” names. This was especially useful when I had to throw out ideas left and right in the middle of pivots, but needed to avoid whiplash:
1. “we need to do this, period,"
2. “we should do this unless you convince me otherwise,"
3. “we might want to do this, what do you think?"
4. “I don't think we should do this, but I’m suggesting it in case any of you think we should."
I think the idea release problem is a big one in part because in the absence of this framing, every statement was perceived as type 1… though it was actually more like 10% / 20% / 40% / 30%.
As a man you are cursed to become the exact size of what you hunt. Hunt pennies and your soul shrinks to copper. Hunt kingdoms and your hands grow large enough to hold crowns. This is the law: God carved your capacity from the same stone as your ambition, and He will not let you cheat the equation. The man who fights giants dies a giant. The man who fights nothing dies nothing
Negative thoughts cannot be ignored, rather, you must replace and revert them back to positive ones. You must open the possibility of success back up in your own mind. Just a good method I found.
NEVER DOOM.
Man. Don’t know how to explain it other than shock. Words cannot express the pain of this letdown. The frustration is unfathomable. I’ve worked my whole life to get to this moment and this is how it ends? Makes no sense.
Now that I’ve gotten surgery, I wish I could count the number of times people will tell me I’m going to “come back stronger”. What a cliche lol, this shit sucks. My foot feels like dead weight fam. But what’s hurting most I think is my mind. Feel like I’m rambling, but I know this is something I’ll look back on when I’m through this, as something I’m proud I fought through. It feels good to let this shit out without y’all seeing the kid ugly cry.
At 25, I’ve already learned that God never gives us more than we can handle. I know I’ll come out on the other side of this a better man and a better player. And honestly, right now, torn Achilles and all, I don’t regret it. I’d do it again, and again after that, to fight for this city and my brothers. For the chance to do something special.
Indy, I’m sorry. If any fan base doesn’t deserve this, it’s y’all. But together we are going to fight like hell to get back to this very spot, and get over this hurdle. I don’t doubt for a second that y’all have my back, and I hope you guys know that I have yours. I think Kobe said it best when in this same situation. “There are far greater issues/challenges in the world then a torn achilles. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, find the silver lining and get to work with the same belief, same drive and same conviction as ever.” And that’s exactly right. I will do everything in my power to get back right.
My journey to get to where I am today wasn’t by happenstance, I’ve pushed myself every day to be great. And I will continue to do just that. The most important part of this all, is that I’m grateful. I’m grateful for every single experience that’s led me here. I’m grateful for all the love from the hoop world. I don’t “have to” go through this, I get to go through this. I’m grateful for the road that lies ahead. Watch how I come back from this. So, give me some time, I’ll dust myself off and get right back to being the best version of Tyrese Haliburton.
