Abdus Salam's Tribute to his Mathematics Teacher 💡

Abdus Salam was a brilliant physicist and a Nobel laureate who made significant contributions to the field of particle physics and the unification of fundamental forces. He was also a devout Muslim and a proud Pakistani, who faced discrimination and persecution for his religious beliefs. One of the rare facts about him is that he had a deep love and respect for his science teacher, Anilendra Ganguly, who taught him mathematics at a college in Lahore before the partition of India and Pakistan.

Salam sought to locate his teacher after he won the Nobel Prize in 1979, and requested the Indian government to help him find him. He finally met him on January 19, 1981 at his residence in Kolkata, where he paid him a heartwarming tribute by putting his Nobel medal around his teacher’s neck and saying that it was a result of his teaching and love of mathematics. Salam’s teacher was very old and feeble by then, and could not even sit up to greet him. Salam’s gesture shows his gratitude and humility towards his mentor, who had inspired him to pursue his passion for physics.
