@fvall003 @dcmireles #UCR50 Hello Fiorella! I also found this pretty surprising while reading the chapter this week. I wonder if it is due to selective recruitment or athlete's decision to not participate in athletics anymore? It's an interesting topic.
@dcmireles Along with the topic this week, I thought the findings of this study were fitting. They had found that male varsity student-athletes in revenue-producing sports were at risk for impaired acquisition of career decision-making skills. #UCR50 https://t.co/CdH24hdr1s
@dcmireles It would be a good idea to grant certain protections to SAs to help shield them from exploitation from the NCAA & build a specialized system where they can 'unionize'. Their thoughts/input on the policies that affect them need to be heard #UCR50 https://t.co/zMHXq677Nw
@chloedjenkins @dcmireles Hello Chloe, Thank you for sharing this! I did not know the extent or the specifics to which this rule is enforced; It is very suprising and gave me a better understanding on the NCAA policies placed on student-athletes #UCR50
@SoniaMonroy15 @dcmireles #UCR50 Also, if anyone is interested, a good documentary that illustrates the complexity/difficulty of reporting Title IX violations in Higher Education institutions on the whole is called "The Hunting Ground". It is on 'NETFLIX'; here is the trailer: https://t.co/cyYVqdJBXz
@SoniaMonroy15 @dcmireles Hello Sonia, very good points! To add to this, I also think it is difficut on the whole for students to report Title IX violations at universities and obtain legal justice bc of how it affects the Uni.'s image (Uni's don't report/follow through bc it affects statistics) #UCR50
@dcmireles I also found this helpful timeline from the women's sports foundation that lays out Title IX's legislative chronology/history #UCR50 https://t.co/wxb65GXFNb
@dcmireles This opinion article was interesting bc it showed how pregnancy/Title IX/sex discrimination in coll. athletics all interact with eachother. One good idea they mention is informing all SA's of their title IX protections in their advising #UCR50 https://t.co/0xX9BR3yZe
@fvall003 @dcmireles Hello Fiorella, I really liked this article! I like how it revealed the complexity of the isssue & how it mentioned that even though some colleges may include minority coaches, few institutions have yet integrated them into the decision making process of the organization #UCR50
@amahmood1025 @dcmireles Hello Ali! I liked this article; I also found it striking that college sports was the only area covered to have below a B for racial hiring practices. I also liked that they brought up the idea of implementing the Eddie Robinson rule and the Judy Sweet rule #UCR50
@dcmireles This TIME article raised a lot of good points/questions on systematic racism in college athletics and some of its deeply rooted history. I found the 'college football industrial complex' idea very interesting. What are your thoughts? #UCR50 https://t.co/E6OUWvcvs9
@MaaaarisollM @dcmireles Hello Marisol, I really like how you addressed this angle of SA success! This low/high teacher expectancy of students reminds me of Rosenthal & Jacobson's, "Pygmalion in the classroom" study where they found that teacher's expectancies significantly affected their outcomes #UCR50
@Michaela_Rose98 @dcmireles Hello Michaela! Very good point! Related to this, there are some proposed interventions* for them and I also found it interesting that athletes tend to seek psychological help less often that their nonathletic counterparts*. (*study in my 2nd to last article post) #UCR50
@dcmireles I like how this article brings light to the athletic housing 'arms race' (which I had not known of before). Presidents and students also make good points and inquiries on the topic of luxury athletic housing. What are your thoughts? #UCR50 https://t.co/R62KLSajmE
@ChristinaChena5 @ljohn014 @dcmireles Yes, I could only imagine the difficulty in trying to sustain injuries and still fulfill demands of classes/athletics. A related topic of interest could be how much school they miss due to injury. #UCR50
@ljohn014 @dcmireles It may also be important to keep in mind that the NCAA has a regulation to only practice students for 20hrs a week. This regulation is often overlooked and they practice students more than what is explicitly mandated. This is where the compensation debate comes into play #UCR50
@Naomi_Alvarado @dcmireles Hello Naomi, I really liked this article! I liked how it gave a lot of good (and practical) suggestions for supporting student athletes. I also liked the concept of providing athletes paid or unpaid internships that worked around their sport season for career preparation #UCR50
@dcmireles I found this study to be very important in understanding the psychological stressors that college athletes go through and how to properly treat them. Athletes experience a great amount of stress but seek help less often than nonathletes. #UCR50 https://t.co/dSzKXBTBnP
@Ashley_Robateau @dcmireles Thank you for sharing this; I really enjoyed reading it! I liked how Dan R. recognized that student players are VERY precious, but they are being economically exploited. It also questioned what messages and values they send when the coach is paid more than the Uni. Pres. #UCR50
@dcmireles This article demonstrates the problems that athletes face in the amateurism debate. I liked how they interviewed students on whether student athletes should be paid and showed the perspective that non-payment could facilitate dropping out #UCR50 https://t.co/RO6LE8F8j6
