Rishi Sunak had an opportunity to show genuine leadership. He could have said: "Don't be so crass Piers, it's not the role of a Prime Minister to gamble with desperate peoples' lives or government policy. This is serious, and it's my job to ensure that everyone is treated with respect, dignity, and compassion."

Instead, he was bullied into taking an obscene bet. He's either weak, doesn't care, or has no self-awareness.

Not so long ago, this would have been a resigning matter. Nowadays, the lies, incompetence, and scandal come daily. We've become acclimatised to the bar being so low in high office that mud no longer sticks. It just slips down a wall of our collective shame.
