While Market Garden grabbed headlines, operations like Undergo quietly underpinned the Allied campaign. Without secure ports, the great push into Germany risked grinding to a halt. Calais did not prove as useful a harbour as Antwerp would later be, but its capture was nonetheless a critical step in clearing the coast, removing German strongholds, and freeing shipping lanes across the Channel. The operation demonstrated the Canadians’ ability to adapt, improvise, and succeed with limited resources in a theatre often overshadowed by larger, more glamorous battles.
On 25 September 1944, following a day of artillery and aerial bombardment, the 7th and 8th Canadian Infantry Brigades attacked from the west at 1015 hrs. The German garrison fought with determination, though by the 28th they asked for Calais to be declared an open city. A truce allowed 20,000 civilians to evacuate, but the Canadians resumed operations shortly after. On 30 September, the 7th Canadian Infantry Brigade entered the city and encountered no further resistance. The formal surrender of Calais soon followed.
Operation Undergo: Calais, September 1944
Operation Undergo was the assault launched by the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division against the heavily fortified city of Calais in late September 1944. The attack was part of a wider Allied drive to secure the Channel ports, essential for sustaining the advance into Northwest Europe. By September, the armies were outrunning their supply lines, and while Antwerp had been captured intact, it remained unusable until the Scheldt Estuary was cleared. Every port between Normandy and the Low Countries became a potential lifeline.

I’m wondering if my friends can help, retweet and sign this petition.

The background is my friends niece, Jess, passed away from Brain Cancer aged 36.
At the time of diagnosis, she had one year old twins (boy and girl) and a five year old son. As you can imagine this diagnosis was an absolute bombshell for her, her family and everyone involved in her life.
A group, BCJ (Brain Cancer Justice), is made up of people who are currently suffering from a brain tumour, and those who have lost a loved one to this hideous disease. They are trying to increase gov funding into research as at the moment it gets less than 1% of gov funding but is the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40 years old.
Please sign the petition and share the post as they need 100000 signatures to get it debated in parliament.
Thanks for reading 🙏❤️ @almurray
