The reason French cities have better public transport than British cities at much less cost (almost no cost in fact) to the national government than here is that they raise local taxes on payroll (closest thing we have is employer's NI I think) -- up to 3c on the €.

@NickStathamLDR Is this a first for Stockport actually enabling cyclists not to have to give way to a turning vehicle. Although guess it will still be safer to stay on the carriageway rather than slowing down to take the bend on the path.
