We all have the right to live safely & with dignity. But climate change is putting billions of lives at risk. From devastating wildfires around the world to floods triggered by a glacier collapse in Nepal, the impacts are already harming communities today https://t.co/rVq2AMawNo
Around the world, extreme heat is exposing the deadly cost of climate change, corporate greed and political failure. Communities should not pay with their lives while fossil fuel companies continue to profit. It's time to make polluters pay.
"Extreme heat is not a stand-alone disaster. It’s a multiplier of human rights harm" @MartaSchaaf, @amnesty director of Climate, Economic and Social Justice
This story about rampant cheating in the Ivies that OP is sharing ran in NY Magazine last May; it’s a year-old piece.
However, a similarly disturbing story about AI use by UC Berkeley and SFSU students also ran in the Chronicle earlier this week:
The climate crisis isn’t just about emissions, it’s about power. When authoritarian governments crush dissent and control information, climate harm deepens and accountability disappears.
In this sharp OpEd, my colleagues @MartaSchaaf, @amnesty Climate Justice director, and @nazia_e, our Media manager, expose how repression is fueling planetary breakdown and why climate justice cannot exist without human rights.

By walking away from the world’s landmark Paris Climate Agreement, the #USA is setting off a global “race to the bottom,” dismantling cooperation, emboldening anti‑climate actors, and threatening to erase more than a decade of progress.
As @Amnesty's @MartaSchaaf warns "this decision, along with acts of coercion and bullying of other countries and powerful actors to double down on fossil fuels, causes particular harm and threatens to reverse more than a decade of global climate progress under the agreement"
🌍 We need global solidarity now more than ever. Governments must push back. Civil society must speak out. The planet cannot afford this retreat.

🚨 We urgently call on @UNFCCC & Simon Stiell to reverse the harmful directive sent to Brazil that has intensified security forces at COP30.
#IndigenousPeoples, env. defenders & civil society are not a threat. The right to peaceful protest is fundamental — at COP30 & everywhere.
The juxtaposition of these figures on the # of fossil fuel lobbyists at COP and the images of Indigenous protestors literally breaking down the doors to get in is illustrative of the injustice of global climate governance. https://t.co/mygTpcx6OE
Nothing that was said today in the Oval Office changes the facts: Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine was an act of aggression and a manifest violation of the UN Charter. Sustainable peace in Ukraine is only possible through justice and accountability for all crimes under international law committed since 2014.
“The sheer volume and scope of proposed changes to these vital laws are completely at odds with Europe’s green ambitions and its climate action commitments” warned @AgnesCallamard

Prioritizing profit over human rights and the future of the planet, the U.S. is instigating a race to the bottom in corporate regulation. The EU must stand for a measured approach - a stable economy that doesn’t rely on human rights violations and environmental destruction.
At a time of mounting US pushbacks against regulation of multinational companies, Big Tech and other actors, the EU must show leadership in the protection of human rights, the climate and the environment.
We all want to live in a safe, clean and healthy environment. This requires laws with clear and firm human rights and climate protections.
Yet last November @EU_Commission President @vonderleyen announced alarming plans to “simplify” three key pillars of the European Green Deal, including the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, which obligates companies to conduct appropriate human rights and environmental due diligence around their operations, and those of their subsidiaries and parts of their value chain.
This omnibus proposal is due to be published this Wednesday. Last month @Amnesty and 170 other organisations warned that this will create costly confusion and risk weakening vital protections for people and our planet: https://t.co/HhTaohx9kK
Information emerging about the draft proposal indicates severe watering down of key laws.
@Amnesty calls on the EU Leadership and Member States to ensure that the process is fair, transparent, inclusive and avoids undermining the key protections contained in these crucial laws.
No matter what corporate lobbyists say about efficiency, it is not in humanity’s best interests to let the planet burn in the name of “competitiveness” and “cutting red tape”. Sustainability regulations are essential if Europe is to meet its existing commitments on tackling the climate crisis.
All eyes are on Europe. The EU should encourage a race to the top by setting high standards and promoting a level playing field for companies – all rooted in sustainability, human rights and the just transition we all need.
The health and prosperity of future generations is dependent on today’s leaders putting the right guardrails in place.
The Justice Department has removed a report from its website that lays out recommendations for tackling the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women.

.@JDVance's stance on AI deregulation undermines civil society efforts to push for regulations that protect rights.

The inhumanity, illegality and absurdity of Donald Trump's latest proposal for Palestinians and Gaza leaves me breathless.
And I think of all the people in Gaza who have confronted a genocide for the last 15 months, have lost their loved ones, homes, neighbours, community, jobs, farms, now live on top of rubbles... and wake up to this announcement.
There must be only one possible answer to this proposal: a resounding, firm and united No.
From the neighbourhood states of the Middle East to Europe, From Africa to Asia, and including Latin America, there is only one possible, historical and human response: a resounding, united, collective NO.
NO to its inhumanity. NO to its territorial grab. NO to its illegality. NO to the mockery it is making of people's right to self-determination. NO to more conflicts and sufferings and pain. NO to the renewed instability and insecurity regionally and globally. NO.

USAID provides life saving assistance for millions of people across the globe, helping to build more inclusive and resilient public sectors and environments where entrepreneurs can thrive. Dismantling this will have grave consequences for peoples lives.
“An abrupt collapse of USAID would put the rights of millions of people around the world at greater risk," said @dpaulobrien executive director, @amnestyusa. Full statement ⬇️ https://t.co/VBx3chtm5N
Yesterday @WWAttribution reported that the devastating Los Angeles wildfires were made 35% more likely by climate change, with higher heat and drought driving the climate risk. Later is too late; the time for action on climate is now
The wildfires in California, USA are an UNnatural disaster made more likely and more dangerous by decades of government inaction on climate change and lying by fossil fuel companies.
