We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Commissioner, Emma Bonino.
Her legacy is marked by her dedication to making the world a more just and compassionate place.
Our condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.
Let me get this straight:
ITALY cannot "suspend SPAIN from SCHENGEN" 🧵
1. That power doesn't exist in EU law. A state can reintroduce its own border checks, as a last resort. It cannot exclude another Member State from the Schengen area. Full stop.
2. This week, after migrants crossed into Ceuta, Italy's FM Tajani said he backed "closing Schengen to Spain." Salvini echoed it. Meloni talked of "extraordinary measures." Spain summoned the Italian ambassador.
3. Italian ministers linked the threat not to what happened at the Ceuta border, but to Spain's decision to regularise ~500,000 undocumented migrants. That's a domestic policy choice, squarely within Spain's competence.
4. So this was never a border-security response. If it were, it would run through Frontex, the Commission, and the actual Schengen evaluation mechanism not an X post, right?
5. Why it matters beyond Schengen: the EU is a "common legal order," not a state. It runs on mutual trust, the presumption that Member States act in good faith and follow shared rules. That's what makes a Spanish residence permit valid in Rome.
6. Threats like this don't just misstate the law. Repeated often enough, by enough governments chasing a headline in an attempt at scoring electoral points, they corrode the trust the whole system depends on, and shift the EU from a rules-based order toward a power-based one.
7. The hypocrisy: Meloni's own government has committed to admitting 500,000 foreign workers through successive decreti flussi, because, like Spain, Italy's economy runs on migrant labour. Source: https://t.co/4ZdWCBYXgR
8. Italy can't suspend Spain from Schengen. But by pretending it can, and saying so often enough to sound plausible, Rome is helping erode the legal order that makes Schengen and the EU work.

Last year 250,000 of the world's super rich flew so many times in private jets it equaled the heat-trapping emissions of the entire country of Tanzania with 67 million people. Carbon pollution from private jets soars 46% since 2019. https://t.co/R7spoWhlLm

Hurricanes require a lengthy recipe list to materialize, but scientists agree that ocean heat has been pushing these storms to new limits recently. See how a heat wave in the Gulf of Mexico contributed to Hurricane Milton’s rapid intensification. https://t.co/oX3rOtRiZ4

Let us #PrayTogether that each of us may listen with our hearts to the cry of the Earth and of victims of environmental disasters and the climate crisis. May we make a personal commitment to care for the world we inhabit. #PrayerIntention#ClickToPray
I was deeply moved by my meeting with coastal communities in Samoa forced to move their homes inland.
Sea levels are rising at a rate not seen in at least 3,000 years.
If we don’t reverse these climate change trends, we will see this tragedy in other coastal areas globally.
Earth is becoming hotter and more dangerous for everyone, everywhere.
@UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres urges a concerted effort to address extreme heat by protecting the vulnerable, using data-driven solutions, and phasing out fossil fuels.

Thrilled to release this report commissioned by the Brazilian G20 Presidency today
Just like we have a minimum tax on multinationals, we need a minimum tax on the world's super-rich—and it has become technically feasible
🧵with the main findings and proposals
Strong points @JohnKerry:
- #Gas & #CCS no viable business model, will face NIMBYism, not reliable option.
- is cynical about tv ads on “green gas” as it simply does & will notexist.
- Big CEOs made their bets on EVs and renewables, against #FossilFuels, makes no sense to go back
I’ve seen eight letters denying African delegates a visa to enter Germany for the Bonn #SB60 climate talks. Some African campaigners are calling for the talks to be moved somewhere everyone can get to https://t.co/4JeL8tyTJa
