ATTENTION: Recently We’ve been made aware of scammers who are impersonating well known writers online. Here’s a statement issued by Penguin Random House explaining the situation:
Scammers are using established writer’s names and making false claims that they’re interested in mentoring or giving advice to other writers. Please be cautious. Often, the goal of these scams is to steal money, intellectual property such as a manuscript, and/or valuable personal information. If you’ve received a suspicious communication, please report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center: https://t.co/aZhfk8szry. When you’re a young actor, people with more power than you will label you as a type. The gag is that they might do this before you know who you are in real life. As soon as Sebastian Stan started auditioning seriously in his early 20s, it was obvious there was basically one thing everybody wanted from him. “Until quite recently, I had to battle this conception of me as being like the asshole character from ‘Karate Kid,’” says the actor, now 44. “A waspy asshole. A dick.”
A big break was ‘Gossip Girl,’ where he was cast as a slightly older degenerate gambler. A way bigger break was getting cast in Marvel movies, as James “Bucky” Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier. There is a limiting factor to being so square-jawed and blue-eyed and symmetrical, which is that smirking hot villain is about the extent of what mainstream Hollywood knows what to do with you. In recent years, though, Stan has realized that he knows what he wants to do with himself.
After two decades in Hollywood, Stan has become a leading man by physically transforming himself — and by searching for lower-budget, independent, and international films in which to do it. Last year, he won a Golden Globe for his lead role in ‘A Different Man.’ He was nominated for an Oscar for his preening, self-serving Donald Trump in ‘The Apprentice.’ This fall, he stars in ‘Fjord,’ directed by Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu. As soon as Stan arrived on set in a remote Norwegian village, the crew swiftly immediately shaved off all his hair — because otherwise, Mungiu says, Stan is “too handsome for my kind of cinema.” When asked if he’s motivated by difficulty, Stan tells features writer Madeline Leung Coleman: “Seems like it.” Later he admits, “I’m drawn to a situation that provokes failure.”
