It takes courage in a deeply entrenched patriarchal society to speak up against harassment. Women and girls are silenced by the chauvinistic culture of victim blaming. But the time is now for us to speak our truth so there's #nostoryleftuntold. Our voices carry unshakable power and we're witnessing that in real time.
But @ODPPUGANDA and @PoliceUg How did the file of this case of @hanakiryowa get lost to warrant dropping of charges? The victim & alleged perpetrator are alive. It’s it hard to open a new file? Why are you breeding violence? Your actions promote impunity

We applaud @Makerere for the action taken against Dr. Buyinza Faisal. As we await the outcome of the investigations, the @ODPPUGANDA should reopen the victim's case that was closed in 2014 @hanakiryowa deserves justice to the full extent of the Law
#justiceforHanifaNakiryowa
A significant step towards #Justice4Hanifa@hanakiryowa@Makerere has constituted an Investigation Committee & Buyinza has been directed to step aside with immediate effect.
Thanks to Prof. @SsaliSarah for setting the process in motion.
Now, let due process take its course.
Amidst the hostility directed towards me by men of this category, we remain resolute. Motherhood weeps, and her anguish must not be silenced. We stand with @hanakiryowa not in opposition to men, but in unwavering condemnation of violence, impunity, and the culture of silence.
"I am not free while any woman is unfree even when her shackles are very different from my own" ~ Audre Lorde.
@ODPPUGANDA may we know why Hanifa's case at the CMC at Buganda road was discontinued in 2014?
#JusticeforHanifaNakiryowa
Hanifa Nakiryowa was an ambitious student at Uganda’s Makerere University when she met her economics lecturer, Dr. Faisal Buyinza. He used his academic power to pressure her into a marriage that quickly became a prison of severe domestic abuse.
Determined to break free, Hanifa bravely left him. In retaliation, she was lured to his home in 2011 and ambushed with industrial-grade acid. The catastrophic attack dissolved her nose, blinded her right eye, and left her permanently scarred.
Though her body was shattered, her resolve was not. She founded CERESAV to champion acid attack survivors, yet her own attacker walked free after the state dropped the case.
Hanifa’s story remains an urgent, unyielding cry for justice and accountability.
JUSTICE FOR HANIFA ⚖️⚖️
From crisp whites to vibrant pinks, our members are showing up in style as we come together to connect, reflect and celebrate our collective journey at the #AGM2026. 🤍🌸

It is difficult to watch the videos circulating online and the allegations of torture and mistreatment of people in custody.
I listened to Praise Aloikin say that Ugandans should never find ourselves negotiating for human rights. She is right about the principle: human rights are inherent. Freedom from torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment is protected by our Constitution.
I am mindful that the UPDF disputes the authenticity and characterisation of some of the material circulating online. That is precisely why credible, independent institutions and due process matter. Allegations this serious should be investigated and the facts established.
As legal practitioners, we have a duty to speak up when allegations of torture or unlawful treatment arise, regardless of who is involved. Every person in custody should be treated humanely, brought before the courts and afforded due process. Let the evidence be tested and let the facts come out.
This is why we need strong and empowered institutions-the Uganda Law Society, the Uganda Human Rights Commission, our courts and other institutions charged with protecting constitutional rights.
Surely, Uganda belongs to us all 😔.
16 years after ratifying the Maputo Protocol, Uganda must turn commitment into action.
The SOAWR Coalition in Uganda calls for the full domestication and implementation of the Protocol, including lifting reservations to Article 14, strengthening women’s SRHR, advancing gender equality, and addressing harmful social norms.
Women and girls deserve rights that are realised in law, policy and practice not just on paper.

We join fellow women’s and human rights organisations in calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Ms. Rose Tumusiime.
While we mourn the tragic death of musician Moses Matovu and extend our condolences to his family, continued detention without court appearance raises serious concerns about Ms. Tumusiime’s rights and due process.
We call for evidence-based investigations, accountability for the actual perpetrator, and full protection of Ms. Tumusiime’s rights, dignity, safety, and access to legal counsel and family.
Read our full statement and join us in demanding justice, due process and respect for women’s rights.

Praise is a mother and her child needs her back home. She has committed no crime by exercising her right to freedom of speech, a right guaranteed by the Constitution of Uganda.
She is currently at CPS where she is being pressured to consent to a search of her phone.
Consent obtained through pressure or coercion is not genuine consent.
Praise deserves her freedom. Her child deserves her mother back home. #FreePraiseAloikin
