@ylecun is leaving Meta to launch a startup, one built around world models and physical AI, not language models.
His exit comes during a major internal reshuffle at Meta. The company has been shifting its focus toward super-intelligence, building a centralized organization (TBD Labs) to chase post-LLM breakthroughs.
As part of that shift, LeCun’s long-running FAIR lab, Meta’s pure research group, was deprioritized, and he was moved to report under Alexandr Wang, the newly hired head of Meta’s superintelligence division.
With Meta pouring billions into scaling Llama and data-labeling infrastructure via Scale AI, the company’s roadmap is increasingly tied to larger and more capable LLMs. LeCun, meanwhile, has been very public about believing that LLMs “hit a ceiling” and cannot lead to human-level AI.
His new startup aims to build systems that understand the physical world-learning concepts like gravity, movement, object permanence, and 3D structure.
This direction is gaining traction: Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs has raised $230M, NVIDIA is pushing Cosmos world models, and DeepMind’s Genie is exploring similar ideas.
LeCun’s view is simple: AI won’t reach general intelligence by reading the internet. It needs perception, prediction, and physical intuition, the foundations robots rely on.
