#Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau Opposes University Transfer Decision, Accuses Ethiopian Government of Education Disruption
----
Mekelle, September 15, 2026 (Tigray Mass Media Agency) — Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau has rejected a decision by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education encouraging students enrolled at universities in Tigray to transfer to institutions elsewhere in the country, calling it another attempt by the genocidal regime in Ethiopia to undermine education in Tigray.
In a statement issued today, Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau said the directive comes after six years of severe disruption to education, including the destruction of schools and higher education institutions and interference with academic programs and national examinations.
The Bureau accused the federal government of disrupting the previous academic year through budget cuts and interference, saying students and educators continued their studies despite the challenges.
It further cited recent air and drone bombardments carried out by the Prosperity Party-led regime in Ethiopia on educational institutions as part of continued pressure on schools and teachers as registration for the coming academic year begins.
The bureau accused the genocidal Abiy Ahmed’s regime of using education as a tool of what it described as genocide and systematic destruction, warning that the latest university transfer decision could force higher education institutions in Tigray toward closure.
The Bureau called on university leaders, academics, students, the Tigrayan community and the international community to condemn the decision and exert pressure for the continuation of education in Tigray.
Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau said the government and people of Tigray and remain committed to ensuring that higher education institutions continue operating despite the challenges.

Abiy's Drone Damages Primary School in Korem, Southern #Tigray
----
September 12, 2026 (Tigray Mass Media Agency)- Three days after the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, the genocidal regime of Abiy Ahmed carried out a drone strike on Zikre Swat Primary School in Korem, Southern Tigray, damaging school property.
Korem City Administration said the drone strike took place on September 12, 2026. It reported damage to the school’s property
Observed annually on September 9, the International Day to Protect Education from Attack was established to draw global attention to the consequences of attacks on schools and other educational institutions, protect students and teachers from death, injury and psychological harm, and safeguard education as a protected civilian space during conflict. Its central message is that children must be able to learn in safety, free from the threat of violence.
The attack in Korem comes amid previously reported destruction of educational institutions across Tigray. Before today’s strike, the Tigray Education Bureau had warned that schools built at significant cost were being destroyed by ongoing airstrikes carried out by the dictatorial regime in Ethiopia.
It is to be recalled that the bureau has repeatedly called on the international community to ensure that Tigray’s education sector is not treated as a weapon of war and to establish accountability for attacks and destruction targeting educational institutions. It had also reported previous drone strikes on schools in Southern, Southeastern and Eastern Tigray that destroyed significant educational property.
The strike in Korem, occurring just three days after the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, has renewed calls for international action to safeguard Tigray’s schools and ensure that places of learning remain protected from the effects of conflict.
A true peace process requires fairness. By echoing federal grievances while ignoring the blockade and bombardment of our civilians, the EU is inadvertently becoming a cheerleader for the siege of Tigray.
The TPLF is committed to peace, but peace must be just. We call on the EU to correct its course, acknowledge the federal violations, and return to the neutrality that made the Pretoria Agreement possible.
